2002. That year in the World Cup, Mick led Ireland to qualifying from a group containing Germany, Cameroon & Saudi Arabia without losing a game. They were knocked out of the last 16 by Spain on penalties after drawing 1-1. This was after captaining Ireland to the Quarter Finals in the 1990 World Cup where they lost 1-0 to host nation Italy.
Please no, we need rid of Schopp but MM is not the answer. I'd say he's pretty much finished as a manager (certainly in the top two divisions).
Macca has always stated he won't manage us. He recognises he's a legend as a player and doesn't want to tarnish that.
Can understand Cardiff sacking him. Reds legend for me. I saw his first games and as said above along with Evans was probably our best centre half pairing. Generally got good results as a manager but I’ve never been a great fan of his management style. Wouldn’t be my choice to replace Schopp and it’s a none starter anyway he wouldn’t come especially with the current regime who wouldn’t want him.
Indeed, quite a few players there said it was the most brutal but accurate character assassination they’d ever heard. Im sure if he’d played 300 games for Wednesday, nobody would have even the slightest clamour for him to manage us. Leave the good memories as a player and sentimentality to one side I think. He did give a good speech though at rimmingtons funeral. I’d rather have him as a floating sounding board than a coach.
