Kayfabe didn't come in until the 90s so majority would have known Undertaker/Mankind was scripted nothing is fake about wrestling it's scripted which is a difference. Mick Foley put his body through that much punishment as Mankind that he retired from full time pretty young after only a few years at the top of his game. The majority back in the Andre/Hogan days would have seen it as real though in the early 80s.

Wrestlers these days have it much easier with blading banned in WWE so you can only cut/show blood if it's an hardware (genuine) cut. Chairshots to the cranium are also banned since the Chris Benoit double murder of his son and wife. Wellness programme that's in place helps those with drug problems so wrestling has never been so clean.

I don't watch it anymore. But I did, from the late 80's until about 2002. And I've seen all the documentaries etc and it's fact that the crowd/viewers at Wrestlemania thought it was real at the time, when Hogan bodyslammed Andre.

The Mankind/Taker hell in a cell match was when it was at it's best. The attitude era was quality, with DX, Austin, The Rock, Mankind etc. Blood, violence, sex, language.

But from what I can gather, it's gone all soft these days. I watched an episode of Raw last year, and it was pathetic. None of the wrestlers other than CM Punk and Cena had the moves or presence of the attitude era wrestlers. And it all seemed so gay, and kiddie orientated.

I do however, watch the odd TNA event, which pisses all over it, despite the ageing roster.

Love Austin Aries in particular. Better than any on the WWE roster I'd suggest.

Andy, those 2 you mention are bloody rubbish wrestlers, they are popular with the kids though.

    It's gone stale.

Shame, because as a form of entertainment, the attitude era of the 90's was spot on.

You are right the Attitude Era of like 1997-2000 ish was the best ever for all the reasons you mentioned. Two reasons Vince Mcmahon changed it from a Rated R product to PG were......

    1) More money made from advertisers due to family friendly product.
    2) Having grandchildren who he wanted to watch the product without worrying about what they might see.

You mention TNA and they still do the Rated R stuff but they got over the top with the blading. I don't mind a bit of blood to add to a storyline but there is far too much of it. The young guys around these days aren't going to have heavily scared foreheads from all the blading like old school guys like Ric Flair have. Concussions still happen though as champion Dolph Ziggler isn't around at the minute for that very reason despite the banning of Piledrivers, chair shots to the head etc. Austin Aries is cool but with most things TNA ruin it. They built him up as a top tier main event star and now he's back to being a tag team wrestler. WWE have with The Shield probably the best faction wrestling as seen since the original New World Order of WCW. TNA's faction of Aces & 8s full of nobody wrestlers and with far too many guys watering the group down is very poor in comparison.
