Id argue you arnt watching him at all if thats your genuine opinion, although im sensing a bit of fishing here?
Yep, that sums it up for me. I think we'll struggle if we go up, but if we don't we are going to be doing another summer rebuilding job. Hope we do & carry on with the same attitude & commitment & we have every chance. That is how Warnock kept Rotherham up & I've faith in Hecky to give us a fighting chance.
Interesting read and I can see your point on most of it some observations of my own though more about the turnaround than the dismal first half season The signing of Hammil Brownhill and slightly later Fletcher made a massive difference. The realisation that Nyatanga wasn't a left back and wasn't one of better centre halves was important the breakthrough of George Williams also a real bonus Now to the thing I disagree on. A Win at Wembley is really quite important this time round. I doubt this time next year we will have a better side. Brownhill Fletcher Isgrove and Hammill will definitely be gone and a good chance that Hourihane and Winnal will as well chances are we will not replace all with players as good if we don't go up we will need a much better summer than the last one if we want a chance at automatic promotion also the current side is much better than the Ritchie one. To me it's much closer to the Hunter one from 1981 that went up then finished 6th the following season. Whilst I doubt we could seriously hope for a playoff place I don't think we will be struggling in the bottom 4 or 5 places. I think promotion would secure Winnal Hourihane and give us a good chance of keeping Brownhill and Isgrove and maybe even Fletcher so we are looking to build on the team rather than start again
If we go up we'd seriously need go strengthen otherwise we would seriously struggle. A couple of experienced, yet not old, players would be key, possibly a central midfielder and right back. Plus some pace up top. Money would need to be spent. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I don't think we will struggle at all if we go up,all about opinions though I suppose this team plus additions would finish nearer the top than the bottom.
Ive not got a magic mirror or a crystal ball , but one thing is for certain in my mind ....id love to see these lads staying together to see what they could achive....big ask on PC part but if we do it next week id love it to be made possible and keep them all together
Enjoyable read as ever, even if I don't agree on certain points. Django has already made any point I might have made, so aye, nowt to add for once. You Reds.
Jay, I don't often post i'm more of a reader but I find you to be one of the more sensible posters, was just wondering something... Forgive me if I'm wrong but I remember reading during the Johnson in/out debate that you thought the players weren't very good and that was the main reason for our dour run. Genuine questions, when did this opinion turn to the point that you now think we could be a comfortable Championship outfit? And does this change your opinion on how Johnson performed?
I believe that if we do get promotion, this team has a great chance of staying together and improving in the championship. We would be in a great position to offer Winnall and Hourihane new and improved contracts and Mawson, Roberts and George Williams all have 2 years left anyway, so we would carry on to build up from a solid defensive foundation. There is a very good chance that Hammill and White could be persuaded to stay. As for the loanees, Brownhill, Fletcher and Isgrove, I reckon Man Utd could be persuaded to extend Fletcher's loan and the other 2 could be offered contracts with a fair possibility that their parent clubs would sell to us. This keeps the core of the team together and the most important bit of summer transfer activity would be to strengthen the squad in depth, as Hecky as mentioned, ideally 2 players competing for each position wherever possible. The moral of club and team is high, the players obviously give their all for Hecky and to a man they would all be very keen to prove their championship pedigree. I am confident that we could consolidate to mid table back in the championship, and if we stick to the policy of the kind of player that the club signs, which is now showing signs of being very astute, we would become better and better. So , promotion would not be too soon and we have the momentum and confidence to hit the ground running, back in the championship. It would be a far harder task, should we fail to get promotion, even though it has been a fantastic run in 2016. With only one year left on their contracts, Hourihane and Winnall could prove very hard to keep, especially if the right financial offer came in from championship clubs. This money would then need to be spent intelligently on squad rebuilding. Who knows what Hammill would do, it's hard to call. Would he remain loyal to the club that gave him the chance to resurrect his career or would he have to think of his family's future and move for higher wages? Couldn't blame him if he chose the latter. The loanees might also move on to the better experience of championship football as teams will have taken notice of our recent superb performances and will be sniffing around, I am sure. With 2 years still left on the contracts of Mawson and Roberts we will still have the chance of rebuilding the team from a solid defensive foundation, but urgent rebuilding of midfield and attack would need to take place as early as possible this summer. Luckily, the club has already started this with the 2 recent acquisitions. The club and board have learnt a hell of a lot over the course of this season, so once Hecky is employed full time, as he surely must be, it will be full steam ahead in the summer, attacking either the rebuilding or strengthening of the squad, depending on our league status. This all starts from a week today. So, I strongly believe that promotion isn't too soon, but if it fails to come off, I believe the club will act accordingly and do it's upmost to build a squad that is very capable of competing at the top of league one, next season.
We don't have the same team now as we had then. Hammill, Brownhill, Isgrove, Fletcher and Williams were not part of the team that I predicted would be relegated. And it wasn't so much that I thought all our players were rubbish, it was that we didn't have the experience in the team. I saw some decent individual talent, but we were way too young and way too inexperienced as a unit to win football matches. Things changed for us when we added Long and Hammill to the squad. The experience they brought transformed us. It wasn't just their individual ability, it was the confidence they gave the rest of the team. My opinion of Johnson remains the same. I think he was and is a very good football manager. I think the same of Heckingbottom.
