When I thought about it the other day, I reckoned we needed 6 new players to play 3-4-3. Opinions eh. Looks like we are going to have to wait and see in January.
Lots of interesting comments on this. The way I see it the team is crying out for a genuine holding midfielder. So if the team still wish to persist with 3 centre backs I would adopt something akin to what leythtyke suggested i.e 5-1-2-2 or 3-1-4-2 depending on how deep the wing backs/wider midfielders are asked to play. There would still be fluidity in this sort of system and less exposure when we are being counter-attacked. As many have already suggested however all systems are useless if the players make daft basic errors. Just my view.
I have gone on record repeatedly in saying that I dislike the 3-4-3 system. My biggest bugbear is that the system often takes 3 of our players out of the game. Like you, I would personally opt for a system that kept all 10 outfield players fully engaged for more of the time. Like yourself, I believe that means that we have more players in midfield because those players can augment us defensively and in attack as called upon to do so. We also have a surplus of midfield players, and that sort of system allows us to use more of them in their natural positions, rather than trying to convince them that they are a wing back or that they look good on the bench.
Not using this as a stick, but I saw these stats for WHU versus MU (just after half time) Possession isn't the be all and end all.
Whilst Bournemouth looked good going forward, defensively they looked average, with other teams taking their chances Bournemouth will come unstuck quite a few times especially if going behind. Results so far suggest this.
