Ahh somebody mentioned the loss away at Grimsby at Easter '82 , which virtually ruined our then promotion hopes. And we did the same again there at Easter '95, we largely played them off the park and still lost 1-0. And again, this virtually ruined our then Play off hopes. And its horrible there at Grimmersby, a garbage little ground and it stinks of fish poo.
A game against Norwich at home, late in the season where we had to win (I think) in order to avoid relegation. I went full of hope of a rousing effort. We never tried. By that I mean both the team and the fans. Like we knew we were going to lose. And we did. It was my worst "why do I bother?" moment.
No one will remember this but Northampton at home, they went down to 10 men, had one attempt on goal & scored. We had 37,000 attempts 3 on target & lost 0-1
Ahh yes the last home game of the relegation season, in Apr '02. I think Naarich were going for the Play offs at the time and they even missed a pen while it was still 0-0. But thats no excuse for how little our lot seemed to care on the day, it was like we were down already.
Away at Wendies in the Premier League. D-I-Wańkio with the monk on all game, fouling and mouthing to the ref. Should have been sent off but you just knew he would score the winner.
Going back to the last two games of the season in May '91, at home to Newcastle & Middlesbrough. We all know how it ended on the last day, but that 1-1 midweek game in hand against Newcastle was a huge let down, and a massive 2 points dropped. As with a lot of matches that have been mentioned on this thread, it makes me wonder "what if..".
That's the one. Just looked it up. 2 Jan 89: I remember it being nivvering and my mate counting corner after corner.
The really frustrating game that season was one that we didn’t know at the time was basically a promotion play off final, before we had the play offs. 24 February 1982 - Barnsley 0 Norwich City 1. If we had won that match the greatest Reds team I (and I know many, many others agree) have seen would have been promoted, come the end of the season. Of course, in February we weren’t to know that, but it would be nice to be able to go back in time and tell the players before the game! It’s why the players need to be on their game every game. And what might have been, eh? We wouldn’t have needed to make many signings, if we’d gone up with players like McCarthy, Joyce, Glavin, Banks, McHale, Aylott and Parker. Maybe the years would have caught up with Chambers, Evans and Barrowclough, if we were going to be coming up against top flight opposition week in week out, and maybe a better keeper would have been needed, but we wouldn’t have come straight back down. If only we’d beaten Norwich in February.
