RE: That Sunderland game was great I think Hignett and Ward overlapped for a couple of games at that stage of the season.
Grimsby 3-2 Barnsley 9-04-82 2-0 up at half time through 2 Colin Walker goals and the corner we're literally stuffed in to is absolutely buzzing (there was no such thing as health and safety in those days, it was like a can of sardines in there). We're going up, no one seems to doubt it. 45 minutes later we've lost 3-2 and our promotion credentials lie in tatters. According to soccerbase we play the very next day at home to Derby (is that right?). We draw this 0-0 and from memory it's the most boring game of football that has ever been played. We draw the next game away at Wrexham 0-0. I was there too and the team looked flat. We do rally and win the next three games before completely falling apart at home to Leicester where we have two sent off and lose 2-0. That's it, the dream is over. The final analysis shows that had we beaten Norwich at home in a game we lost 1-0 we would have been promoted instead of them, but for me it was the second half at Grimsby that did for us. We looked shell-shocked for the next two games despite gaining draws. Such a shame as I'm absolutely positive the team we had could have performed well in the first division (premiership).
RE: That Ipswich game was terrible... Ashley Ward scored a goal, missed a penalty, and got sent off in that match... all in the space of five minutes
RE: Grimsby 3-2 Barnsley 9-04-82 Remember it well. The conspiracy theorists were out in force on that one. "They dunt wanna go up, ar tell thee. Cant affoard it". The football we played in that first half was awesome and it just fell apart after the break. Unbelievable. A shame because that team was definitely the best we have had in the modern era. It would have been interesting to see how they would have done at the top level.
RE: Losing 6-1 at Tranmere despite being best side by far nt we broke down that night at tranmere, came back to barnsley on the team coach
I think the reds cup quarter final where the big un rose like a salmon against the millions of chelsea has to be the greatest result in the history of barnsley f c.
RE: All the goals were scored at our end Remember that goal well. Funny how some goals stick in the memory, the ones that hurt and the ones that were important to us. Bearded Nigel Batch in goal, remember giving him loads of grief.. Nigel, Nigel, Nigel! Always enjoyed Grimsby away, beer at that big pub on the front, fish and chips, we always take a few and there's normallygood atmosphere in the away end.
Barnsleys win at millenium we got battered but still come up trumps and the day was unreal and dont forget our form in league up to that can only be described as awful.
Can't remember the date... But Grimsby at home when we totally dominated the game and peppered their goal for 90 minutes, with their keeper putting in the finest/flukiest goalkeeping performance I've ever seen in any match, ever (was it Danny Coyne?). We were camped in their half, must have had 30 shots, but still lost 3-0. Or was it 3-1? I'm getting old... Remember going home in disbelief and watching the report on Look North and even the guy summarising said "Grimsby manager Brian Laws ought to write a book on how to be totally outclassed for 90 minutes but still come away with what looks like an emphatic victory" - or words to that effect.
RE: Losing 6-1 at Tranmere despite being best side by far nt More surreal by the fact clean cheet after clean sheet either side of that freak rersult.
Yep, we really struggled on the run-in that year. The rot started when Burns was sold, very strange decision to sell an ever present when you are supposedly going for promotion. Bizarre.
