I'm sure I recall clubcall or someone doing something similar many years ago.

Perhaps to get around that problem you could just text the squad number of the player.

This would also get around the problem of people spelling the name wrong, as these polls are usually done by computer so your spelling has to match that on the computer....so no chance of Kay winning it as most people on here insist on spelling it as Kaye. Then again there's not much chance of him winning it anyway!

Also using numbers would help the part timers who'll turn up shouting "come on number 7, well played number 9" - I don't actually mean they turn up shouting that, as in being at the turnstyle just shouting out random numbers!
