Get the train from Tarn to Honley or Berry Brow, walk to the pub, have lunch and a few pints, then walk to Stockswood, Shepley or Shelley for the train back.

Look forward to visiting the pub again. Haven't used it since the early 90s. My local is due for a change in owner, so it might become mu local (although it's 3 miles away!)

De Hems is having a mini resurgence with a great manager in charge - faltered a couple of years ago, but back to it's best.

Coal Hole is one of the top five pubs in the brand, and Doggett's is looking better than it has in a long time. Argyll is typical West End, trades well but has it's own difficulties due to layout and where it's located.

Best performing brand in Mitchells and Butlers though, so I'm glad it's still mine!

Great shout on the Summer Wine front, they will be huge in a couple of years!

Their Oregon, Rogue and Coffee Porter are all top notch. Should have a look at Magic Rock as well, local to you and HUGE in London at the minute.

Yeh, it's great walking country, very picturesque. Woodsome Valley, Castle Hill, and surrounds are all picture postcard pretty. As been mentioned, you can walk to pub from Honley, Brockholes or Stocksmoor stations if you want to get the train from Barnsley. Honley is closest, uphill there, downhill on way back. Stocksmoor & back is much flatter.

Alternatively just buy the local OS map and make up your own walk, can't go wrong in that area, it's all nice countryside.
