I'm a big fan of drummers and there is some cracking footage on YouTube which shows how insanely talented they really are. http://youtu.be/Q8D1u5RjIP4 http://youtu.be/Ijrnrm4nXuw
I think you're confusing a quote by John Lennon about Ringo Starr. Pete Townsend did once say something about Moons' ability but he later said that he didn't mean it the way it came across.
I've never as much picked up a pair of sticks, so not an expert, but I did like the way Bill Brufford kept a rhythm in the beat combos of Yes and King Crimson.
Baker was probably technically better than Moon but Moon wins it for me because of his raw aggression, speed and power. He turned the drums into a lead instrument. Some of his beats and rhythms were phenomenal.
I agree with you - I like drummers that turn it into an instrument its own right rather than just a metronome. I'd also agree that Moon does this - as do Baker and Peart. The thing is, Keith Moon has been dead nearly 40 years. Scores of drummers have come along since who have played with more sped, aggression and technicality.
mmmm, got me wondering now...thought the Lennon jibe was directed at George Harrison being the fourth best guitarist in The Beatles...Pretty sure Townshend made the Moon quote on BBC4's, The Making of Quadrophenia, documentary.
You're right he did but not the quote you mentioned; that was definitely Lennon. Townsend had a dig at Moon being rated as the best drummer of all time and said something like 'he wasn't that good - sacrilege, I've said it now' but later said that he meant that the Moon deteriorated from the drummer he was and that this tarnished his memory.
its hard to say who the best drummer is because fans of certain groups admire their respective drummers..i've seen peart several times and would say he's the best i've seen and rush are probably the most technically gifted band i've seen,Geddy lee playing keyboards and doing the bass lines with his feet whilst singing at the some time takes some beating. any drummer that gets a job playing in any of ritchie blackmore's bands must be good,so both Ian Paice and Cozy powel must be up there. Joe Bonamassa had two drummers playing for him one time i saw him, they played in complete unison for two hours, including jazz type beats, again they were as good as anyone i've seen. John Bonham is always named in the top two or three drummers because he was that good, simple as that,,ask any good drummer what their opinion is of him is and they will all tell you how powerful and gifted he was.
