There's fuller details on the BMBC website (Has been on since 15th Feb).

Going outside the Barnsley Interchange as well, not the Peel Street plinth (druggies and drunks will be pleased).

In front of the town hall is a statue of a soldier that represents a soldier (the fallen heroes of war from the Barnsley area) straght forward to understand

We also have a statue of Dickie Bird that represnts Dickie Bird (Barnsley born cricket umpire) straight forward to understand

We now have a statue of a small boy with cubes all over him to represent Barnsleys mining heritage. Really????? You've lost me on this one.

    I can't disagree with that.

And yet you ignore the fact that it's mainly being funded by private money, not by the council!

Agree with you entirely on that - what does a futuristic-looking boy have to do with mining "heritage"? Appalling waste of money (for all contributors) if that is supposed to reflect the mining history of the town. Just where do they get these silly ideas from?

Well I quite like it, but then again I grew up playing on Tetris, Rubiks Cube and Super Mario.

Maybe doesn't represent the mining history very well but lets face it a sculpture of a miner with a pick axe would have been a bit predictable and slightly boring. I remember when they built the Angel of the North and people were moaning about it, I always thought it looked stunning.

There's loads of mining related public artworks dotted about in a tradional style, this seems to be something a bit different and I like it.

I thought the Civic Clock was rather good.

It's a pity it never worked for more that a day or two at a time. Maybe the components were made at the same firm as those for the scoreboard.

    I take it that.....

....at the civic unveiling most councillors/officials will be present, a free meal/booze will be had by all - at public expense of course-, and most councillors will claim their attendance allowances! Money well spent then.

Goes back to the days when a park bench donated by a widow was 'unveiled' and several councillors claimed their attendance allowance and had a meal/reception at the town hall. The 'free' bench c/w brass plaque cost the rate payers a few thousand pounds as a result on that occasion.
