I thought Souza said... After the West Ham cup game that he wanted to play in England for the rest of his career? I maybe wrong, i wouldn't have mind keeping Souza for cover but i would have Foster and Moore every time. Would like Kozluk to stay, either that or get a left-footed-left-back signed up!!
RE: The priority has to be a target man... spot on, we never replaced stan with a like for like target man, even though he was poor last term I think we could have used ferenczi this season at times, I think boggy and macken have started to form an ok partnership with boggy running over the shoulder (hence his offside count) and macken holding ball up, i've been saying all year that we've been lacking partnerships in the side, I think the front 2 need to work together, the full backs and wingers overlapping down each flank, the midfield 2 (which in fairness have been prob our best pairing in da silva n colace) the centre halfs aswell
RE: I thought Souza said... well he may have said that? I agree though he's a decent enough centre back and probably the best out of the 3 in the air, but he does lack pace which is an issue when paired with moore, gets turned 2 easy sumtimes and isnt very good on the ball but all in all think he's a good option as 3rd choice but maybe that isn't what he wants to be playing 3rd choice cb for barnsley? as for kozluk he's had no competition since he signed really, would be nice to have another good option at left back to challenge him and fill in when he's suspended/injured and maybe even take his place altogether?
Agree to some extent with that... But, i do rate Colace and De Silva highly and i think they'd both walk into any Championship side, but don't you think one of them needs to make way next season for an attacking central midfielder to get settled in that position? We've missed Howard this season and an ideal replacement would be to go for Nicky Bailey, think he'd demand a high transfer fee though and Charlton have said they don't want to sell him. I'd love for Bailey and Colace to partner each other in central midfield next season. Nothing against De Silva but i feel Colace is better at the defensive job.
RE: Agree to some extent with that... agree yes but although we do miss goals in midfield theres also the fact that our midfield was getting reguarly overun when we had howard, da silva and 2 wingers but it did deliver more goals going forward so its a tit for tat really, put in a midfielder who is going to run past the strikers and get into scoring positions but concede more? I just think if you have hammill, campbell-ryce, an attacking midfielder and colace, you will get overun in midfield as we lack strong physical midfielders? but we need an attacking midfielder in the squad at least
Yep your right there... That why i think SD played his 3 CM's of Colace, Anderson and Andranik and fair play to him for tinkering with that. Would play just the 1 winger against teams like say Newcastle? Middlesborough? If they come down. But when we played with 4-4-2 (JCR-Anderson-Colace-Hammill) towards the back end of the season we took more chances away, so like you say it's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other, against teams like Forest at home who were there for the taking should have been 4-4-2 but i think SD was just too scared of losing. I'm happy for him to have another go next season though aslong as he signs the players we desperately need (CB, LB-maybe, CAM, LM-Hammill? and Striker). 5 players will be needed in my honest opinion. Oh and if Steele doesn't sign his contract we'll need another Keeper because we've released Letheren.
I know what you mean in regards Souza being "cover" But, he has played a LOT of matches this season (and last season too) - and the defence has performed remarkably well. IMHO, Souza has more than played his part. Foster & Moore have missed quite a few games between them. Also, will Moore start next season as slowly as he did last time around - when people were calling for him to be axed from the team?
Indeed... Even if he did have a torrid start. I'll admit i did slate him at the start of the season, glad to see i've been proved wrong!
Excuse me chaps but this season Anderson/ Howard played once together in a 0-0 draw at Southampton when Hume missed a sitter to take all 3 points. So they were hardly overrun in their one and only game together(Anderson`s first game back).
But Colace also played that day... Protecting that back four, SD played a 4-5-1 with: -Colace Campbell-Ryce-Anderson-Howard-Hume All in Midfield.
RE: But Anderson isn't better at protecting the back four Not sure about that. He was a DM before his injury, playing alongside Howard.
Needs to be a target man. Parkin, Iwelumo type would be ideal. Also need a left full back (still), another CB (maybe 2), an AM and Hammill (or another wide player if he isn't coming. 6 or 7 needed maybe, depending on GK situation.
RE: But Colace also played that day... He did so they never played together this season in a 442. Anderson Howard worked well the season before in a 442 when JCR and Devaney were the wingers who did a lot of tracking back and defending. Now JCR roaming free exposes Kozluk and that weakens us defensively.
I think we need the following positions strengthening. Left back, (left footed ideally) ie Scott Golbourne, Reading or Peter Gilbert who has been released by Sheff W and is available ona free. Centre Back Ian Breckin - Premier League and Championship experience. Good aerial presence and natural leader. (Forest made available this week) Michael Nelson - Hartlepool. Very dominant centre back, powerful and tough. One of best in league 1, wants opportunity at level above. Left Wing. Wes Hoolahan - Norwich, may cost a few quid but creative player and left footed and may not want to play in league 1. Graeme Owens - Just been released by Middlesbrough and did very well at Blackpool on loan last season. Dani N'Guessan - Lincoln City - Out of contract, very big and quick centre forward or left winger but no experience at Championship level. Central Midfield. Tommy Miller - released by Ipswich yesterday. Tough experienced player at our level. Nafti - released by Birmingham - Read comments re Tommy Miller. Sammy Clingan - Norwich. Very good player, would cost a few quid again but experienced and still relatively young. Forwards. Jamie Cureton - Available on a free as contract up at Norwich and is a proven goalscorer. David McGoldrick - Southampton, very powerful and quick. Only about 22. Scored lots of goals for a relegated team including against us at Oakwell. Dean Bowditch - released by Ipswich, looked very good 2-3 seasons ago when burst on to scene. Would also love us to sign Hammill again on loan but would imagine there are a few clubs interested in him.
There were ocassions with them in the middle that we were over run Since Colace got in the side this season we've been a lot harder to score against. Other than Crystal Palace away, and the second half against Norwich, we've proved a difficult side to break down for everybody in the league. Howard, Colace, JCR and Hammill - now that's a midfield of a playoff side
Target man??? This will give the excuse for a Blades type punt out of defence. Might be playing to Moore's srengths mind.
