A far wiser man than any on here once said : "Football is a simple game, complicated by idiots" "Football is a simple game based on the giving and taking of passes, of controlling the ball and of making yourself available to receive a pass. It is terribly simple." I tend to agree Sent from the darkest recesses of a poisoned mind.
The biggest factor is us going to one up top is that it's bloody hard to find quality strikers that fit into our budget. Much easier to sign work horses like Bradshaw with a goal scoring number 10 behind him
The really sad thing is that I complain about the absence of debate on here, on then Hemsworth gets involved and there goes my argument. Back to the drawing board I think.
Think yourself lucky it isn't Tyrone. That's like trying to have a conversation in the Nags Head and Trigger butting in.
I think there's merit in those comments, but it could also have been a case that we didn't have the strikers at the club post January to play 442 the way he wanted, and having lost Hourihane who played his role ever so well, we had to shift accordingly. I'm interested to see what he does with a clean slate and a pretty sizeable rebuild because I do think 442 limited us at times and caused us huge amounts of workload that meant we had to be by far the fitter team to stay in games. I think a lot of time is absorbed here on a formation by number, rather than the intent behind it. I watched Machin play 4 strikers and it still be negative tripe that was impotent. Like you say, its the transition between 4-5-1 to 4-3-3 that makes a difference and can have more attacking players committed than a 4-4-2 where you could then quickly be caught on the counter. There's always 3-5-2 which Chelsea are bringing back into vogue, and we do have one fullback (if we can keep Yiadom) who I think would be very good in a 3-5-2. If we can find personnel and structure that allow us to have phases where we can keep the ball a bit better, that should serve us better over a long season.
The first quote is the words of a great ex-Barnsley player I believe. Danny Blanchflower. I agree with both quotes, him, and you! Sent from my SM-T710 using Tapatalk
Bang on CT it was Shankly. A truly great man. Once talking to a lad from Doncaster who had a trial at Liverpool. He took him onto the Kop at Anfield and said " I could open the gates now and 10,000 will come in to just watch the grass grow." The lad Archie Taylor tried his best but had a right mare. He tried to trap the ball a few times and it skidded off his foot every time. Shanks took him to one side after and said "son you could nay trap a bag of cement". Archie eventually went on to play for York, Halifax, Doncaster, Bristol City and had a brief spell at Oakwell. Ended up playing for Hatfield Main in the Yorkshire League.
One that made me laugh was there was a story that he had taken his wife to a League Cup game at Rochdale for their wedding anniversary. Shankley said the story wasn't true - "as if I would get married during the season".
Yes, you're right. Happy to stand corrected. I'm blaming Google. Sent from my Moto G (4) using Tapatalk
He went into the Newcastle dressing room before the Cup Final in 1974. He thenwent to the Liverpool dressing room and said " if you want your house haunting, there are 11 ghosts sat next door." Liverpool went out and beat the Mags 3-0. I saw Shanks play. It was a an All Stars X1 against Doncaster Rovers to mark the first game under the new lights at Belle Vue. It was around 1952 so he was around 39 and was the manager of Grimsby Town at that time. I had the programme up to around a couple of years ago. I sent a photo copy to John Motson ( keen collector) and he advised because it was signed by both teams it was worth around £250. (I eventually got £400 for it.) Some of the All Stars team were Frank Swift, Leon Luty, Len Quested, Dally Duncan, Jack Shaw, Jackie Sewell, Peter Doherty , Shankly and the great Tom Finney. It finished 1-1 with Finney scoring for the All Stars with a player who played for Barnsley from 1959-62 Bert Tindill getting the Rovers goal. Those were the days.
