I don't think such history is in any way relevant. We and they have totally different teams from those of years ago. What is perhaps more relevant is the fact that Charlton looked a very good side earlier in the season at Oakwell and now have a very successful manager at League One level.
But it is! Otherwise our historical record against all clubs would be very similar- and they aren't. One example which will probably be relevant next season. In 16 league games away against Wrexham we have never won. And conversely they have never won at Oakwell in 16 games
I don't think it is relevant further back than a season or two, the point at which the personnel of both clubs is likely to be different. There are 92 clubs so we're going to happen to have great historical records against some and poor records against others. If you flip coins against 92 people you're likely to have someone who you beat 5 times in a row - it doesn't mean you're better than them at flipping coins.
It does seem to work though. Look at us against Liverpool - we are unbeaten at their place since the 50s (we've won 4 in 12 in total) - or Manchester City - who we've beaten 6 times in 33 games. Which would you be more confident playing against - especially away?
It doesn't work, it's just statistical variance. I'd have zero confidence in either match, we'd get absolutely pumped in both. Believing an Ashley Ward goal 27 years ago has a material effect on our chances of winning today is like astrology for football, it makes no sense.
This is also why it's very easy to tell between actually random coin flips and people writing down what they think looks like a list of them! Everybody thinks that rows of coincidental heads, for example, look suspicious, but it's actually the lack of them which is the tell.
Surely past record is irrelevant, statistically and objectively? different sets of players , managers , circumstances etc
Jones will do a great job at them going forward but they’re probably on the beach now. I think we’ll win on Saturday knowing we probably have to with Stevenage and Pompey coming up. The same pressure probably goes into the Reading game as well. Charlton will be up there next season. I thought they'd gone for it pre season to be honest and expect them to go for it again this summer. Outside bet for winning the title next season but hopefully we’re not in the league to see it.
Time before last we lost 2-0 under Stendel and we did everything but score. I can’t remember Charlton having many chances other than for the goals. Oh and someone near us blamed ‘Daaaaavies’ for everything.
I'm expecting after the results this aft, ever the 'its not over till it's over' or the 'till the fat lady sings' gang.. they'll even quitely except... We ain't going up top two. Expect Charlton to be firering under Nathan little B@stardo.. plenty of goals today 4-2 Charlton..
I went to Charlton for the game when it was £5 tickets, my abiding memory is that there was the worst smelling person I've ever encountered sat on the row behind us first half, gagging bad he was, such an unclean smell. He moved in the 2nd half to a seat a few rows further back and about 20 seats down, could still smell him. Fair ruined the day he did.
