Think we walked past it on Sunday, is it upstream from a weir in the Aire and further down, Salts Mill?
There are 2 weirs, the big one near Salts Mill with the salmon ladder, and a rougher one further on near an old mill and the boating club. That one is closer, so yes if you were near that and walked towards Coach Road you were pretty much there!
I'm more interested in old Railway Architecture. However, I like threads like this. It's a shame what happened to this country after the second world war. Modern isn't always better. You just have to look at the majority of railway stations in our region then dig out some history books to see what I mean.
Great thread. A little closer to home, this one has caught my eye recently. It's on Mortimer Road, which runs from Midhopestones towards the Derwent Valley. The property, or what's left of it, stands just before you reach The Strines Inn. It's so sad to drive past and see it falling to pieces. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.th...dge-has-one-last-shot-at-survival-3586358?amp

We kept to the Riverside, it was all very interesting and steeped in history. Beautiful part of the world, mixing nature, geography and industry....
Apologies for bumping this, but just added a quick guide to the FB Group for those who fancy a little read: Milner Field.docx or
Fascinating stuff, love threads like this. When I was a kid living just off Donny Road I was obsessed with archaeology to the point of digging a gret ‘oyl down the garden. Parents thought it madness, til I found Victorian coins, ceramics and masonry. Turned out I was digging in the grounds of the long lost Mount Osborne estate, or something like that. Can’t remember the exact name or where it once stood
And just like that, the committee of a stuffy once a month village society who, reading their post, seem blissfully unaware of what's in their back yard (and haven't for 70 years) are trying to put the mockers on things
I notice that Rats refers to damage done by developers or the Luftwaffe. But others are also responsible. Because I'm the Barnsley chap that raised 'The Mill of the Black Monks' six feet from burial by the Council in the 1880s. Because it's in Barnsley! Hence delighted it's gone on to contribute rates and jobs for over thirty years. And as the man who won a competition to design and 'build' the NUM HQ in Sheffield, I produced a scheme in 1991 to unite Mill and much later Priory for their mutual benefit. A scheme that was sabotaged despite finance being in place via City Challenge! And in 2021 was instructed by the Council Leader and MP not to bother them again! And have failed their promise to get back to me if they learned of any funding to protect it from flood. Even when I wrote asking if the Government approved of them spending millions on the homes of their electorate while excluding a priceless piece of heritage which has contributes so much to Barnsley for many centuries.
