Loved Bamburgh and Chillingham Castles. Particularly Chillingham ( supposedly one of the most haunted in England) because you can actually touch and hold stuff ( that was pre COVID though) for instance they have a table of actual ancient weapons, it was fascinating to feel the weight of maces and stuff, I wouldn’t have lasted 2 minutes, one swing and I’ve been over. One off the most macabre was a (used) oriental beheading sword that was really finely balanced! might sound a bit weird but I love history,
I've actually got that series recorded as I saw they were venturing around the north so thought there may be some inspiration.
We generally tend to drive about an hour in a given direction (sometimes a bit more depending on what we're aiming for) and then meander our way back to base and pick up places to see on the way back, and on the day we get there, or the way home, we'll stop off at places we'd like to see that are a bit further from our base. Just had a quick google and that certainly looks impressive. It's not a corner of the UK i've visited at all or have much of a perception of really, so it will be interesting to discover.
That seems very sensible. Allows you to see a lot of places in one visit. If you do head to Tynemouth, I would highly recommend Riley’s Fish Shack, honest to god possibly the best seafood I’ve ever tried. As a pescatarian, it was heaven. Hope you have a great holiday, mate.
I will certainly try my bestest! ;-) We've a few breaks coming up. Off to Porthleven and Marazion in early Feb and early March. So hopefully they are very quiet and we can potter around a little. if not, the places we're staying have some stunning views, so even if its reading a book and watching the weather or a bit of nature... I'll take that gladly. I can't deny, the thing thats been hardest through this pandemic period has been the lack of venturing around and exploring. Though when we have, in a way, its been good as we've been able to explore more of the UK and discover places we had little idea that they existed.
The roadworks on the A1 mentioned earlier aren't due to be finished until Autumn 2025 and at times cause very long delays! If you like the look of Tynemouth then I would suggest using the Tyne Tunnel route and having a couple of hours stop over in Tynemouth on the way up! I have lived in the NE for over 50 years and still have not seen everything that Northumberland has to offer so be selective. The beaches which have already been mentioned (Ross Sands and Beadnel in particular) are some of the best in the country.
If you go inland Rothbury is worth a visit too. Echo Newton-On Sea / Embleton / Dunstanburgh Castle. I prefer it to Bamburgh TBH. Great beach & more places to eat & drink.
Yep, Anstruther one of my favourites, down the coast from you. Probably the friendliest place I've ever visited.
If you want to drive further afield Berwick upon Tweed has some good walks and views. There’s a place about 90 minutes North of Craster that’s quite nice, you can probably guess what it’s called.
