Just catching up on posts after the weekend and there's just so much that's demoralising about this weekend, result aside. I've spoken with a few people over the last year and half discussing what may evolve after lockdowns and post covid. Quite a few thought we may come out of it a kinder, fairer and more selfless society. After the first few months when some incredible people emerged as heroes, and as the atmosphere cleaned itself with nature bursting all over, mankind, we seem to have increasingly regressed. Maybe lockdown has brought out the neanderthal in people. Booing of knees (across the country), singing over a minutes silence, mutual abuse of fellow supporters, fighting and so much more which seem minor in comparison. It may have happened before, but it seems to be back with more vim and gusto. Rather than turning over new leaves, learning new behaviours, it seems that a section of people instead want to make up for their lost months by being racist, abusive, aggressive and selfish. Absolutely grim.
A lot of truth in both opinions. Peer pressure still exists, as does the youthful urge to ‘run with the pack’. The Brexit rhetoric didn’t help, almost legitimising the idea people can do whatever they like. And while I was never one for authority, I still knew what was right from wrong..
Grim, but also no different to how it's always been. If anything it's better now, alot more people these days are more tolerant on a wide range of issues. The evolution of social media just highlights the bad, in my opinion.
It's not social media that boo players taking the knee, or shouting over a minutes silence, or getting into fights around grounds, or smoking in toilets etc etc. Social media is just a form of media. It's a bit like blaming the air for carrying abuse from one set of "fans" to another.
Thanks for the replies. I guess i may have become more sensitive over lockdown - but that Tweet in my OP has got over 1000 likes. To me it’s far removed from “banter”, it’s bullying a kid. Yet people think it’s funny and acceptable. Maybe things have always been this bad, who knows, but I do remember pre lockdown a similar tweet about a BFC fan whose crime was basically being in the background of a photo. The grief he got was met with disgust (and rightly so). I just don’t see that here. In fact, it’s more the other way - anyone who might object is met with ridicule. I’ve seen plenty of young lads chasing around like wannabe hard men in my time. Never before have i seen them go after a man walking away with a friend and a child. It’s embarrassing and depressing.
Trying to appease you on this so you don't think it's a post Covid world, although it's sad that it's a world at all regardless of time. Remember the guy in the crowd with the long neck? That one got way more than 1,000 likes and really did go viral with fans of all clubs mocking him which I believe went on to make him depressed. It's sad that it exists at all but it isn't a new thing - we just haven't seen any of it for so long.
That was the incident i was referring to. It was horrible then - but at least alot of people reacted and pointed out how out of order it was. There doesn’t seem to be any such reaction defending a young Coventry fan this time.
I think the example we're talking about really did go viral and was more personal than just mocking a kid filming what he thought was a last minute equaliser. This hasn't even dropped in to my own feed yet. Neither show anyone in a good light, but there are levels (in my opinion) and the more personal one got a lot more out of hand - hence people being quicker to call it out.
Also, again to try and make you see things a bit more positively (or maybe just not as negatively). Wasn't there a crowdfund for the young girl crying at the Euros? I believe she was mocked on social media and there was a global wave of support condemning that. It's not all bad out there. It's just the extremes of good and bad seem to have widened due to everything being so visible and at our fingertips.
Don't knock the neanderthal. They were not as thick as is reported & not scumbags. Most of our DNA has 5% neanderthal in it and I doubt it could be put down to this behaviour. Lack of education / opportunities maybe, or just people that follow the right wing agenda that rules our nation.
I think the beauty of the BBS nowadays, is it reminds you you’re not alone in your disgust of the nastiness of Boris’ Britain. I didn’t look at this page, let alone post, for a good 18 months through the Brexit debacle. But there’s definitely been an upward moral curve & now I check in almost daily, especially through lockdowns. Welcome back, we still need numbers on our side.
