Every one has their own experiences, to try to diminish one person's experience as not valid or didn't suffer as much is to diminish the strike as a whole.

I was fortunate in that I was working for the council at the time, and my mum was working as a ward sister at Southmoor hospital in Hemsworth, but we donated money to the strike fund, did things for neighbours. No, we didn't suffer, but we did what we could to help as did many people at the time who didn't work at the pit.

The O/P starts with the line 'Britain needed changing'. Just lately this has become some sort of mantra for apologists for the Thatcher years as if it was a kind of truism that was undisputed. That because there was a lot of strikes the winter before '79 somehow the entire country had to be turned on it's head and ruined for decades to come. I think that this is a lie, not only that but it goes unchallenged. Britain would still have changed without her, we still would have all the things we have now, without her. People talk as if we'd be living in the dark ages if Thatcher hadn't happened, and that's just a crock IMO. I tell you what we would still have, and that's a diverse economy not based on finance, insurance and selling each other burgers and here's a thing to think about. If Thatcher hadn't happened and her monetarist Smith inspired wealth of nations bullcrap not adopted the world over, would we have still had an economic crash in 2007?
