I know it's just an old joke but I think Ringo was a great drummer. Good sense of timing, usually does exactly what's needed for the song, played some relatively complex fills and also had his own style. I also think "get back" shows his laid back personality probably complemented the band. Beatles might've split a lot earlier if they had another John or Paul in the band.

IMHO Lennon and Macca was a classic case of the 'whole being greater than the sum of the parts' Without Lennon, McCartney would probably have remained a wannabee. Apart from 'Frog Chorus' my other most hated 'listens' is Mull of bloody Kintyre!!

McCartney had a knack of 'pretty' tunes but Lennon gave the Beatles the edge and steel. Wikipedia entry below*references my favourite Beatles song but also hints at the resentment (perhaps a bit of jealousy) McCartney seems to have. My own opinion is that without Lennon, we would probably never have heard of Paul McCartney but I have a feeling Lennon could/would? have made it on his own.

As a musician there are a few Lennon songs I would have been proud and happy to have penned but struggle to think of anything that McCartney has delivered post Beatles that I am fussed about. I simply cannot believe if he had walked into an A&R office at a major record label as an unknown that any of his post Beatles output would have been picked up.

My favourite song from the Beatles is"In My Life" ......

*.....from their 1965 album the lyrics were written primarily by Lennon, credited to both, who later disagreed over the extent of their contributions to the song. Lennon credited the harmony and bridge to McCartney, while McCartney claimed the entire musical structure.

According to Lennon, "In My Life" was his "first real major piece of work" because it was the first time he penned personal lyrics about his own life. The original version of the lyrics was based on a bus route he used to take in Liverpool, naming various sites seen along the way, including Penny Lane and Strawbwrry Fields. Lennon discarded this lyrical idea in favour of a more generalized meditation on his past. He and McCartney later revisited those original references with their respective songs.

    Opinions eh?

EDIT: Any self respecting muso would have replayed the video of his own performance on the 2012 London Olympics celebration show(I think it was then ) and retired immediately.
