From Hartlepool Website (the monkey hangers)

We are often asked where the term "monkey hangers" comes from and also why the Club has a monkey as a Mascot, so here is the monkey legend to explain&

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The monkey-hanging legend is the most famous story connected with Hartlepool.

One stormy day during the Napoleonic Wars, a French ship was wrecked off the Hartlepool coast.

The fishermen of Hartlepool, fearing an invasion, kept a close watch on the French vessel as it struggled against the storm, but when the vessel was severely battered and sunk they turned their attention to the wreckage washed ashore.

The only survivor, clinging onto the wreckage, was the ship's pet monkey looking wet and sorrowful and dressed to amuse in a military style uniform.

The fishermen questioned the monkey and held a beach-based trial.

Unfamiliar with what a Frenchman looked like and obviously unable to make sense of the replies it gave, they came to the conclusion that this monkey was a French spy and should be sentenced to death.

The unfortunate creature was to die by hanging, with the mast of a fishing boat providing a convenient gallows.

In 2005, a monkey bone was washed up on the beach at Seaton Carew - whether or not the bone is conneced to the legend remains a mystery.

I'm just saying what it looked like from where I was sat and that's not too far away from where the guy with the monkey was sat.

I think "kids for a quid" would encourage people to come along for a match like this, would get crowds up for any lower profile game

I seemed to have mentioned before and after our trip to the Cardiff play-off final how many of the fan's would turn up or just the big final day out.And i was told more or less to be thankfull that all the people attending the fianl would come to the season's games.

If we were getting on average 15,000 i would be a little happier but we are nowhere near that only if a big(ish)away team comes?????

Barnsley need's all the support so where are they now,on the dark, cold wet match day's?

Agree that not such a high profile game would be good at the kids for a quid scheme or a family pass/ticket 2 adult's 2 kids or a pass for 4 people surley at least 10 kids would only be £10 pound, but the noise they would make plus the food, and shop spensing too
