Continuing to sing/ chant this stuff will end up with the authorities taking action against the club. Those planks doing it must have IQs as their shoe size.

They did but they wanted it through force and upheaval. Looked at this on the Internet and several books very little mention of them being political

Violence tends to follow when politics fails. If you are interested in understanding the Irish struggle, research O’Connell and Parnell. Or go back a bit further to Wolfe Tone.

It’s a garbage song I grant people that. Isn’t so bad though to sing about an old dude who believes in fairies?

I have researched it - IRA's intentions were to use armed force to end British rule and that's why it's classed as a terrorist organisation. O'Connell wasn't around in 22 when IRA was formed

The IRA has roots that go a lot further back than 1922. I’m more than happy for you not to know this, just thought you might be interested.

Of course the roots go back further as I said O'Connell was around in the 19th century but the IRA as an organisation was formed in the 1920's

Yes thanks and the IRA came about after their members were released from prison and they formed a guerilla group!

Not quite like that, but then again I’m a bit steeped in Irish history. Anyway, let’s leave it there.

Sorry. Only just seen this. I don’t disagree that the IRA, through all its iterations was made up mostly of men, women and children from the Island of Ireland. The point I was making was lots of other nationalities were Volunteers; yes Americans, but also Australians, South Africans, Italians and a significant number of English, Scots and a small number from Wales.

One illustration is that in the 1920’s that largest Brigade of Volunteers, outside of Dublin, was from the North East of England. A brigade made up of 7 battalions totalling just under 500 men and covering Northumberland, Tyneside, Teesside and particularly Durham. Most of those were not born in Ireland though I assume they had connections with the Country. That’s significant, even allowing for the strength of support for Irish causes in the North East mining areas.

The IRA was around a lot earlier than 1922. It was essentially the IRA that fought the British to a standstill and created what is now the Republic of a Ireland, in the Anglo -Irish war under Collins.
