Last chance of building a new stadium was at Dodworth before all the sheds went up. Very near M1 plus a rail station.
Half a job? Did you see the ground before?! The Eric might be 25 years old but all it needs is some investment. You don't chuck away an investment that huge after 25 years!
This is what worries me about potential new owners/investors, how they sometimes force their own identity on a club. Changing the name of the stadium or even moving to a new one is one thing, but remember Cardiff's owners changed their home kit colours from blue to red, and Hull's owners wanted to put Tigers into their club name!!.
I'm in the restoration camp as regards the West Stand. More decrepit buildings than it are completely renovated and brought up to date every year all over the country. It's not something you often see in football but for me it's part of our history and should be saved if at all possible.
They haven't changed Nice's kit or the ground... the club are going from strength to strength.. be positive
Hey kid, is that Owen Archdeacon in the Celtic shirt ? (he looked like Blackadder even in those early days). Im not against the idea of the takeover, far from it actually because we need something like this. However Im against them forcing their own identity onto a club once they have bought it. I agree about pulling down the West stand by the way.
Agreed. Just some daft foooker probably from another club trying to put a negative spin on what otherwise is potentially one of the best news stories ever to come out of Barnsley.
Yes it's Owen from football 88 sticker book. I think we all agree we don't want them forcing their identity on the club or changing the kit or name to Barnsley dragons or whatever.. Hopefully if that happens then our fans aren't as fickle as Wednesday fans with how theyve accomadated chansiri and how hes put his infruence on that club ..
We've had a few decent Jocks down here at Oakwell over the years (and no Im not talking about you Arabian Ian ). Im actually glad that we dont insist on a pointless second name anyway like City, United, Town, Rovers, or Athletic etc.
I agree we don't need to move, but neither does the last bit of heritage left need destroying..needs a job like Fulham did on their old stand . If the club were to leave Oakwell by choice that would be me done.
Fulham's ground is fecking terrible. What's to save in the West Stand? it would have to have that much taken off it to bring it up to standard that it would be barely recognisable. What would be an original part that would be left? Probably the offices, tea room, board room and the not fit for purposes changing rooms that are all underneath. Its already got new sides and terracing, the seats would need taking out along with the flooring, a new roof so basically a new stand...
I love oakwell as much as anyone but times change. Logistically if we want to progress oakwell doesn't work, on a big match day the area comes to a standstill. Barnsley has always been in a excellent commuting location near the m1 and m62 and we have land to build on. The possibility of for example the old post office at Haigh is perfect for a ground, access from motorway, parking etc this will push in parking spaces bringing in revenue to the club and they would improve food and drink selling in the ground as there would be no competition around. Also the ground would be used for other events, maybe a hotel aswell. It all makes sense to me and the only way we could get in to the premier and stay there or we can just carry on as we are.
Haigh? Are you serious, that would be an absolute disaster. There's worse grounds with bigger crowds than ours to get out of. Oakwell needs a new West Stand, the corners sorting and a bit of a tidy up. Its fine where it is.
