Is that down to Ticketmaster though? They charge stupid admin fees for gigs too and a lot more than £4 too.

M&S will deliver a bloody big parcel full of clothes to my address for £4. If I opt to have the order delivered to my local M&S store and collect it, it's free. I'm not sure where £7 and £4 come from, when the only item being purchased is a small piece of plastic.

There was no fee to collect them last season?

For renewal, there is no charge for retaining our existing cards (think it's referred to as 'digital only', so expect the same for anyone using a smartphone).
If however, you want a new card, there's a £2 charge (per card). That seems reasonable to me.
Then it's £3.50 if you want a card to be sent by post. Given the extra admin & first class post being close to £1, I think that's also ok.
In the past, Box Office have been flexible with email request to save cost by sending 2 cards to the same address - i.e. possibly £5.50 if you wanted 2 new cards & not convenient to collect in person.

It'll be interesting to see the detail on this as it says 'Klarna' in brackets. With Klarna you typically pay the first instalment on day 1. So, if it is a 4 equal instalment plan then it is genuinely a 3 months option. If (as with many Klarnas) it's a 3 instalment plan, that's only 2 months. If the latter is the case it's another case of the club's wording being sloppy/spun.

Moreover, depending on when you get paid each month and/or the funds are available for use at your bank, you still could well only have two months wages to sort the full sum from. Which makes it even more ludicrous and insensitive to hard-pressed fans imho to not have the early bird close on 31st May.

That decision plus the imho insincere and disingenuous spin that's been put on the messages about 'price freezes' and 'wanting to help fans' (really? - make a decision to commit £330 to keep the seat you've sat in for donkeys' years within the next 20 days or so in the middle of the biggest decline in household disposable income since WW2 or pay another £75 as a penalty!! - taking the year-on-year payment increase to 45% btw) have finally forced my hand and made my mind up for me today not to renew.

I've no problem with anyone who can afford to cough up or commit to the full sum right away but hopefully you'll appreciate that some of us can't do that and if the club doesn't have the empathy to even give us a couple of pay slips etc to work out whether we can commit in our time of need, given the support we've given them financially over the decades and particularly in their time of need through the pandemic, then it's, sadly, a no go for us.

The financial climate and general cost of living is trying for many and to thank you for your backing, we have frozen our season ticket prices at 21/22 early bird levels. Barnsley FC being economical with the truth. Season tickets in the East Stand Upper for the Over 65s were £185.00 in the early bird offer last season and you paid £225 for a Reserved+ membership but for that got a shirt thrown in. This season's early bird offer is £215 so represents a £30 increase on the early bird offer last season or some 16% which is well above inflation levels.

‘Upload to existing ticket’ is not an option. You also stated ‘if’ you want a new card. I don’t, the new one I got last season, and collected fee free is fine. The options are quite simple - collect for £4 or have delivered for £7.
I appreciate you are probably just defending the club whilst unintentionally telling me I am wrong. I am not one of the club’s most vocal critics, myself.
But, simply put, do you want a new card is not an option, just how much do you want to pay to receive the new card, which you didn’t want, is.
And I am not getting into the ins and outs of whether it is a price freeze or not, though, this time last year, the renewal could have been to potentially watch us in the Premier League. But I was poised to part with £410 to watch nailed on League 1 football and the £4 collection fee made me just exit the website.
If Just Eat charged £7 to deliver a takeaway, would you expect to still have to pay to collect it yourself?

I sympathise with you and think the charge is wrong but I think the issue isn’t ‘it costs £4 to collect’, I think it’s ‘it costs £4 to have a card printed’ (as you could choose not to have one at all for the first time this year) and then costs extra on top of that to have said card delivered.

Whilst I don’t have an issue with the ‘price freeze’ in terms of it not including the one off discount (I think it was pretty clear last year that it was a one time only thing although BFC should have maybe foreseen people forgetting that or being confused), I do have an issue with it not including a free card as it always has done in the past. Charging for a card when they never have before is not price freezing, it’s an extra expense that’s new to this year. If someone does not have a smartphone then they have no choice but to pay for the card and therefore their price has not been frozen. It’s also sneaky to only mention it at checkout and not be upfront (when they could probably have claimed some environmental benefits).

Did you pay renewal early bird last year, or normal early bird?

    Hi Julian BP,
I wrote the response in a way that I hoped would help other forum users, so apologies if it came across as challenging your point of view.
With my personal account, it's 100% clear there are 3 options (digital, collect and postal).
If you don't have the digital option then, as we found last year, there can be some issues with mismatching email addresses and so on. In that case, please get in touch with Box Office and they should be able to assist.
On the other hand, if you're dismissing the digital one out of hand because you ASSUME it won't permit reuse of your card, then I understand your anger (I wouldn't be happy either, if that's the case).
My own view is that 'digital download' covers my smartphone AND enables me to present the QR code on my current card and I'm confident that is the case.
There's precedent for that, because we received our new cards (non-barcode) and then the club sent us the digital download to match our cards.
I won't be posting again on this subject and I'll be heading to t'well with my smartphone and current card for the pre-season friendly. If I'm not allowed in with my card, then I will spit my dummy and throw all of my toys out of mi pram as I'm wheeled back home (screaming "I should have listened to that lovely person Julian Broddle's Perm"!! :D)

    Renewal.

I feel like last year it was billed as ‘prices have been frozen and people renewing will get a £50 discount as a thank you for supporting us financially during such a weird year’. Therefore, when I heard ‘prices have been frozen again’ I expected it to be the usual price. I didn’t expect to then get another £50 discount off that price as it’s been a normal year in terms of fans being allowed into matches.

Fair dos. I think what’s rankled people is the comms and the spirit of the wording more than anything. Kinda like DFS saying their settees are half price, when they’re basing that on a full price that hardly anyone paid. The card thing didn’t even register until someone mentioned it tbh. But that’s cos I don’t use or want one. I guess to other people it matters, so that’s fair enough.

Haha, no, there was nothing condescending in your post, just an alternative viewpoint. Worse still, I am probably making a bit of a fool of myself over 4 or 7 quid.
I am in a minority, however, in that I am a huge hater of smartphones. I think they are wrecking society (you’ll see the teams of younger folk all sat around a pub table tap tapping on their phones whilst not speaking to each other, or the mum, dad and two kids sat in Frankie & Benny’s eating whilst playing on their devices and generally not enjoying themselves). I am mid 40s so not quite ‘old school’ but I just hate my life being controlled by a little electric box (smartphone) in my pocket. I went on a lads holiday in October and quickly realised I couldn’t, in fact, leave the country without one. It just seems controlling, this whole new digital world.
I am definitely in the minority, but I just want a season ‘ticket’ (pass, card, whichever) like I always have done. I had to use a smartphone to go to Portugal but didn’t expect it to be the only way to attend Oakwell penalty free.
Thanks for calling me ‘lovely’. Fair made my evening has that (would insert smiley face here but, well, you know, no smartphone)

Smartphones can be annoying but they can also be amazing tools if used correctly. My theory is that I treat it like my erm gentleman sausage. It can be fun to play with at home but I'd only ever get it out in public if I have a very good reason. In fact it's like it in a lot of ways because I often wish the screen was bigger and that the battery lasted longer

Anyone worked out how to select the 3 months interest free option?

We're all good, me and you, Julian.
Although I said I wasn't going to post again on this subject, I just wanted to thank you for alerting me to the issue with my current card not working.
Reflecting on our chat overnight, thought I should call the club to check.
They explained that the reason I'd jumped to the wrong conclusion, is because we're moving to the single category of season ticket (no Reserved Plus).
Although I'm surprised the technology couldn't work around that, the box office were their usual brilliant selves with listening and explaining the situation to me.
Like you, I'm not a big fan of fandango smartphone techno so I'm going to cough up the 2 quid for collection / new card.
I was assured that we'll be back to normal next season with no need for a new card, since we'll be a single group of season ticket holders.
I'll say no more on this and promise to keep to that this time :) All the best for the weekend and CYOR tomorrow!!!
