I disagree about him staying longer. If he does very well then he's likely to move on quickly (like any other coach would). If he's **** then he should be disposed of like his preedecessors. Its a result driven business, end of.
Have to be honest and say if someone had said to me we are taking on the Manager from Cheltenham, my initial reaction would/was underwhelming. However as people with a better knowledge than mine started to point out some real facts, I started to question myself. Having read his initial words etc, I feel he could be a very good appointment given the tools and time to do the job. Welcome and good luck to him.
He was keen to stress that he's only had 2 clubs in 27 years and that his dad was decorated for "service to the services" and he's clearly and rightly very proud of both of those facts. Yes he is ambitious, that's what drew him to us, and inevitably he will move on eventually - but he was also keen to stress that he's not a fly-by-night and I get the feeling that he's here to stay as long as we're progressing and matching his ambitions. And I love his first words in answer to the question as to what we can expect from a Michael Duff team - "There'll be sweat on the shirt". Sounds like our kind of guy!
Really hope Michael gets us going. Which will obviously mean he moves on. Hopefully though we get more than 12 months out of him first. Akin to his stint at Cheltenham before West Brom come sniffing for their latest recruits. Wishing every bit of luck in the world Mr Duff.
This feels like the right appointment. We will see whether it works out but I won’t be criticising the club for the selection even if it goes wrong. Well done BFC.
In reality, all ambitious coaches need to be backed by the club. If he gets us promoted first try and then the board fail to back him for a championship season, he’ll be gone. If he get’s us up and we invest in the team to make a good fist of it, he’ll most likely stay. We have to grow with our coaches, not let them out grow us.
The two things that really impress me: Two clubs as a player and manager and he gave up a job for life to do this. My gut feeling is that he’s the right man for the job. I hope I’m right.
Been the case with majority who have come here whether English or not - we've always been a stepping stone unfortunately
I don’t mind if they get us to top half in the Championship and then move to a top 6 championship team or a premier league team etc.
To be honest I have watched the reds for over 60 years & cannot remember more than a handful of managers that have used us as a stepping stone to better things & we have gone through a few in that time . Thinking back I can remember Clarke going to Leeds , Anderson went as a number 2 to Middlesboro , Wilson to the Wendies , Heckingbottom to Leeds & Val to West Brom with Struber I suppose somewhere on the border line ,which in over 60 years is hardly any . I am sure someone will remind me of someone I have forgotten but there cannot be many more .
Yes but in the grand scheme of things we have not been used as a stepping stone for managers , with players it is totally different , any player will want to play at the highest level as their playing career is short & the higher you get the richer the rewards , there are 72 league clubs outside the premier & every single one of those clubs will sell their better players to make a profit ,in fact even top premier clubs will sell if the money is right , however there are hundreds of players & a lot more movement whilst there are only 72 managers in the EFL so it is a lot harder to climb the ladder on the managerial front.
On a point of pedantry , not necessarily - we could finish 18th. It would be our highest position but we would still be relegated.
