Funny that. We used to get money for the bank from Nat West near Chron offices daily. Picked up the money on foot in a leather bag.... two of us... Me 9 stone wet through...same route same time every day!! The only safety we had was an instruction that if threatened do not resist and hand over the bag which often contained several thousands (bear in mind that was the early 70s so quite a substantial sum)......Different times!!
We had a vault with two keys, one of which on one occasion was held by a colleague who had thoughtfully!!? gone on holiday. The master key was held in York H.O. and the bank would not open until the key arrived.
On another occasion (I lived at home with my parents in a quiet Cul-de-sac in Monk Bretton) we were woken up by police...flashing blue lights the lot... hammering on the door. I had to hurredly dress to be whisked away as I had one of the vault keys and the alarm had gone off. (It turned out that a file had fallen off a shelf and triggered the motion sensor). Plenty of twitching curtains and gossip the next day in our street regarding the nightime arrest of criminal 'Mr big'! Big anticlimax when they found out what had actually happened!
