Can't really argue with all that. It's each to their own. But you'll be there next season. And there's nowt wrong with paying on the day. In fact, it's what the proper fan does.
Totally agree, although not sure why we have got here on a post about O'Grady going. O'Grady ran his blood to water for us last term & got a good return in terms of goals. He is 28 & for his type of player has 3-4 seasons left in him. He is a proven Championship player & if we were stupid enough to give him a 500k release clause he can go with a clear conscience. Certainly Mansford needs to show he is making changes. I saw none in evidence last year in terms of the match day experience. Danny needs our full & patient support.
I think the link is that COG was part of a team with a losing mentality, having been signed from a team which at that time had a losing mentality (Fowls) and prior to that having other links to the Chuckle Brothers in Lancashire. [I acknowledge that there was an interval during the 'great escape'.] The guy embodies our ineffective style of play last year and can surely not be improving or getting any quicker at the age he is. I stress [yet again] his workrate is second to none and I've nothing against him personally. But he epitomises our lack of progress. Last season's team wouldn't have cut it at League One level and Big Chris was part of that. So I think he gives rise to the wider discussion about where (or where not) we are going. I'll be going on a match by match basis next year - once I've seen some signs of progress.
All I'd say about that is that we thought past performance was a guide to the future with the 'great escape' team - and look what happened. And as I said, I think you have to see COG's goals in the context of a side where he was usually the only one ever in a position to score. I'm not personally convinced he's the answer - even in League One. But each to his own, and all that.
Chris O'Grady IS a target man & a goal scorer. That is why other teams want to sign him & we will lose him, as we are now a 3rd flight club, with a lot to prove to potential signings. If you are gonna blame players look at most of the rest of the team. Either not good enough (Kennedy, MVoto, Dawson, Etuhu, Woods, Fox), or could not be arsed ( Mellis, Frimpong, Lawrence, Proschwitz, McCourt), or injured (JOB, Pedersen, Hassell
Indeed. But of those 21 goals, I'd wager that the vast majority were not scored from 'positions' only he could score from. As in, he didn't do tap ins, did he? Scored some beauties he has. All sorts of goals.
Agreed. He is a superb centre forward. I have suggested on here that we should be valuing him at £3m. If we get £2m then fine. If he was playing for another club, that's what they would be doing (see Grabban) and if we don't start getting value in the transfer market we will be in league two before we know it. The last few years have been an absolute disaster in that regard. I saw in another post that COG has a £500k release clause in his contract. The clubs stance in the past has been that without these, players wouldn't sign. ********. I could maybe stomach it with Hammill but not COG - he was keen to sign for us. What we need is a hard nosed negotiator.
According to that list Jam Drop posted, Proschwitz scored as many goals for us as OddJob did:biggrin:
The old £500k release clause!! Like Vaz Te and Hammill. Dunno if Howard, Butterfield and Davies also had similar?
Scored 5, missed 2. It's not a great ratio I agree. Ah well, we've got TK on em next season. He's never missed in his career I don't think. Possible captain apparently as well, if Cranie departs. #TK4Life
