Put ferenczi in there purely on the form he was in when he first signed for us. I haven't been luck enough to have been watching barnsley as long as many on here to see many half decent strikers.

I was surprised that Hirsty didn't get a pick, the most promising youngster to leave Oakwell prior to Stones. I thought about big jan Molby and Kenny burns as they are two of the most decorated players we've had but it's fair to say they both peaked a while before we got them!

Hirst and Stones weren't far off mine, but neither really were with us long enough to consider them above the players I chose. Another six months or so and they'd have been in. Undoubtedly the best two home grown players we've produced since McCarthy.

I think it's interesting how we've had many promising youngsters who haven't gone on to achieve their potential but with Hirst and Stones both had that extra something. I agree their Barnsley careers weren't especially long but even in such a short period they showed that they were something special.

Where's Danny Blanchflower, Tommy Taylor et al? What about one of the heroes from 1910-12?

The team that I have listed is the best that I could come up with of players that I have actually seen playing for Barnsley, who were developed by the club during the 50 years that I have been watching it regularly. I was very much assisted in preparing this team by the reference work "The Who's Who of Barnsley FC" by Grenville Firth and David Wood. Tommy Taylor would of course qualify, but I did not personally see him play for Barnsley. Danny Blanchflower does not qualify because he previously played for Glentorran in Ireland, and also I never saw him play for Barnsley. The cup final teams are, of course, well before my personal experience.

I am sure that, like me, you are surprised that the quality of the Best of Barnsley team is not better, particularly the mid-field and forwards. We are currently being told that the academy will provide the young players that will take the club forward. But in the last 20 years only 4 players made the shortlist from which I selected my team. They were Chris Morgan (1996-2003), Chris Barker (1998-2003), Jacob Butterfield (2007-11) and John Stones (2012-13). If that is the best that we can do, then the academy/youth system looks like a false hope.
