It wouldn't be my cup cha but I certainly think it would bring the club back to the fans having players out there on £300 to £400 a week.
Hardly the biggest contributor to the overall budget. You've got kids earning a few hundred pounds a week, and if you cut that level out you might as well close the Academy and adopt a Brentford approach. Keeping hold of potential is still vital to the long term future of the football club. It's not like we're not trying to strengthen the first team or haven't signed players.
Aye. With their £100m plus debt owed to the owner. I never said closing the Academy was a bad thing by the way, just that removing contracts from your U23s would essentially be what you're doing as you're stifling any chance of development up the levels.
What would you say to a complete reboot and club making a substantial profit in League 2 fielding a team of academy graduates?
Not interested. Because I think the pessimism and doom mongering on here after Saturday is a bit over the top. Plymouth was a tough opening day fixture, our recruitment isn't complete, and we've got a new manager, style, and signings to mould in to a team. Plymouth had continuity from Lowe to Schumacher, and only a shocking last five games of the season stopped them making the Playoffs. That would have been a tough game under Stendel nevermind the situation we're in now.
I know it's a gamble with the academy. I reckon the coin we've got in the last 10 years for Stones, Bree and Holgate more than justifies the outlay. Look at Southampton. Low crowds. 'Small crowds' in comparison, but churn them out year after year and are idolised for it.
I don't think it's a gamble and can be even more fruitful in the right setting (League 2). I'd support the club if they publicly stated that's where they're headed. I think they won't be honest about sumat like that in League 1 though because certain fans hanker hopes of a return to the Championship. I don't think that's going to happen and we're going to have to drop into League 2 like Bradford to come back stronger.
