Re: Boy does that make me feel old!! We have done well to not lose there in the 80s and then win there in the 90s and naughties.
My video is still on YouTube for those who haven't seen it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eu5yb9pPZiQ&feature=results_main&playnext=1&list=PL2E4D9443C262AC0B
Re: My video is still on YouTube for those who haven't seen it. I was reasonably wealthy in those days, and drove my RR Shadow 2 though fog from Devon to L'pool for the match, which to that date, was probably the best I had witnessed Barnsley playing. Leaving the ground was a nightmare, with some lunatic scouser (probablt called a scally) whirling a chain over exiting Barnsley supporters heads. I was relieved to get back to the car and find no damage; started to drive back down South but gave up, due to weather conditions near Newcastle-under-Lyme. Went to bed happy (although I'd missed an important early meeting in Farnham the following day). For the second leg I was in the Anfield Bar, off Main Street, Gibraltar, where the scouse owner was convinced Barnsley would 'do them'. Unfortunately it wasn't to be.
Me and the wife were sitting in our stationary car on the slip road from the M6 to the M62. There was a screech of tyres followed soon after by the sound of our world caving in as we were hit from behind by a lorry. Although the police were immediately on the scene, we waited for 2 hours to be rescued by a recovery vehicle and transported away from the mayhem to Lymm. A taxi eventually took us to the station at Warrington where the guy selling train tickets told us Barnsley were drawing. A train drivers strike was due to start at midnight. We got as far as Manchester and had to find a taxi to take us the rest of the way home, arriving back in Barnsley well after midnight having seen nothing of the team's marvellous draw at Anfield. We were beaten easily in the replay. I was more than 2 months without a car.... happy days.
can remember walking on the m62 to stretch us legs we'd been stood that long and not a copper in sight. got in bang on half time.what an atmosphere i'd never experienced anything like it as a barnsley fan up to that date it was outstanding. i'd watched chelsea a few times but its not the same as your own town team. also heard about someone getting stabbed, turns out some scouse bstrds had drawn on someones back with a stanley knife. can remember the build up to the return game there was a tensive atmosphere council workers were cleaning anti scouse graffitti extra police were drafted in etc.
remember it well missed kick off because of fog big Trev missed a free header from 6 yard out then my mate got slashed with stanley knife on the way back to the bus
