I remember going with my dad when we played Rotherham and leaving him to walk round the ground to see if I could find any of my school mates (I went to Wath Grammar so a lot of them were Rovrum fans). I also remember the half-time ritual of swapping ends to be behind the goal we were attacking.
Even when we had a big crowd, there was little chance of being squashed in that area. Then again, in the mid 1980's when we'd get gates of around 4000 for a Second Division game, it tended to get a bit nippy!
Re: I can't remember Les Harris He was a striker we had during the 1975/76 & 1976/77 seasons in the Fourth Division. He scored one goal in each campaign and made Dave Regis look like Mario Kempes.
That would explain it I was a student in Newcastle from 1974 to 1978 and didn't get home very often. After I graduated, I was at home when Alan Clarke arrived on the scene.
Re: That would explain it Started darnt pit in 74 and ed a tash so could afford and get away wi buying ale int su poorters club. Proud time
Re: That would explain it Great pic, me old man and me used to stand in the brewery when he first started taking me around 1979 onwards, me and my mates carried on going in there and then migrated to the ponty around 1988 as all the singing had moved there from the far top corner of the brewery Great days
Re: Did it look like this ? I think that's us playing Newport County, a 2-1 victory. Just found this via the Tykesmad site. http://www.barnsley-mad.co.uk/results_service/1972_1973/25/nov/index.shtml
Re: Did it look like this ? No, there was no players on it, just the away end with four people leaning on a crush barrier (the same one). It was an article about falling attendances.
Great memories. Ponty72 and I stood in the west stand for years - before we became more refined and upgraded to the Ponty end.
I was about to type almost exactly the same we must have been quite close to each other - standing on the wooden terrace as it was warmer on the feet and under cover - though in the early 70's when I was still too small to see if I went back there I used to stand right at the front - below the R of Bitter
Vaguely remember the ground being that way as I was only about 4 when the east stand was opened. But I remember my dad used to sit me on a box on that wall in the bottom right of that picture. I used to hate it, I was scared **** less of falling over the side.
I used to stand in the open in front of where the T and the H were. Only retreating under cover when the rain approached a monsoon deluge. Watford 2-2 springs to mind.
