No harsher in my view than saying it’s your own fault you’re never going to walk again because you chose to get on that fairground ride and you didn’t have to.

    But just my view like.

Just heard on radio one has been named. An 18 year old called Joe who goes to Huddersfield University. Take it that's your sons mate? Horrible what's happened. Folks on social media going on about the big compo they will get but it doesn't make up for what they went through. Especially the person who's lost a leg.

I'm off to Phantasia Land in Germany next week. Never really been that bothered about theme parks, and I like my legs. Oh well.

No one is disputing that everyone on here is entitled to their own view but where did I say that it's "your own fault...." etc?

Popped down there from Rheindahlen in the early 90s, basically because it wasn't too far down the autobahn and because every one at JHQ seemed to have a sticker in the back of their Mercs advertising that they had been there, so I thought.....what the hell, give it a go.

I hated it. My wife hated it. It was very run down and very dated.

I hope they've upgraded it for you ;)

I love roller coasters and it is absolutely nothing to do with danger. It is all about the g forces. A roller coaster is nothing more than an adult version of a swing or a slide and believe me far more children are killed in accidents on swings, slides and roundabouts than adults are on roller coasters. Would you criticise parents for needlessly risking their kids life by letting them go on a swing?

As for this danger thing anyway, roller coasters are ridiculously safe with every inch of their layout thought about and rethought about until they have an exceptionally safe ride. Then they put in failsafe devices, then back ups, then further backups. And just because somehow these have all failed at the same time on this occasion does not make them inherently dangerous.

Roller coasters have more automated failsafes on them than an airplane. Think about that for a moment.

The lad's last tweet was from Alton Towers, saying "only been here an hour and some ****s already run over my foot with a pram" or words to that effect.

There hasntnbeen half a dozen accidents at all, that is lazy journalism. Prior to yesterday there had been 3 safety incidents, only one of which actively involved a carriage.

Yes that's him. Unconfirmed but I've since heard that he has lost a finger and got serious injuries to his legs, but not sure what that means in terms of long term damage. Also his girlfriend, who was with him (another one of the 4 with serious injuries, also from Barnsley) was in the Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital last night

No I wouldn't criticise anyone for riding a roller coaster or for letting their kids go on the swings or some seemingly harmless ride of the sort that they used to have in Locke Park (or maybe still do, not been there for decades). All I was trying to say is that no one HAS to ride these extreme contraptions in places like Thorpe Park. Same goes for abseiling down or climbing up sheer rock faces. That's not me saying that no one SHOULD do these things. All I am saying is that it is a risk you take when you do it and as far as I am concerned there are enough things out there to kill me while innocently going about my business. I have no desire to add any unnecessary risks.

But that's not to say that I haven't done risky, stupid things in my life. I have, like most people. But I hope I've got more sense now ;)

My point was that roller coasters aren't really in any way related to extreme sports. Roller coasters are designed to look dangerous whilst being completely safe, extreme sports ARE dangerous (in general).

A roller coaster is like watching a scary movie. You jump and are on the edge of your seat but in reality you know that the guy on the screen isn't really going to come and get you

Blimey you seem to be getting a hard time for this. For what it's worth, I'm with you.
There are some things in life you just don't have to do. Even if they are exciting/ thrilling.

I used to love roller coasters, but can't stand most rides now. Why do I need to do all that stuff if I don't want to. The answer is that no matter how much people try to persuade me, it's not for me.
So cross off anything with a big drop (bungees, roller coasters, log flumes) and anything repetitive (waltzers etc).

As for safety, well I know nothing about the regulations of Alton Towers Vs Fairgrounds, but when you see 17 year old kids operating rides and those kids are more interested in eyeing up the girls / smoking a ***, than going through the safety checks, it hardly fills you with confidence. (this was not at a theme park but at a local event).

    So, not for me.

Hope the 2 kids from Barnsley make a swift recovery, and the others. Must have been very traumatic for all concerned.

Didn't realise that. The article made it sound like everyone was stuck up there for that long.

    Thank you ;)

I don't know why I bother expressing an opinion on anything on here sometimes. Perhaps it's best just to stick to football, or cricket.

And yes, I agree with you about the staff at some of these things. It might sound a bit dramatic but you are putting your health and well being in their hands and, quite frankly, it doesn't make me feel comfortable. Apart from that I have tinnitus which has affected my hearing and balance for years so what's the point in bringing on an extreme bout of nausea?

Watching SSW weave through a defence and slotting the winning goal is thrill enough for me!

Yes, won't be long now will it! Hoping to see Maxwell smash a few on Friday night from my crap seat in the football stand end (restricted view). My own fault for not booking it sooner.

Wonder if Jimmy Anderson and Jos Buttler will be available for the Lancs along with Root, Ballance and Lyth for us? Would be nice but will be a cracker anyway, whoever is playing.
