Not enough to be cancelled on from either side. But the Oscars, viewing figures wise, was dying a slow and painful death. This is the most coverage they've had the morning after for well over a decade.

Will Smith's marital issues are arguably far more damaging overall. The fact he went on to win speaks volumes.

Nah sorry don't buy it. Plenty of ways to create a bit of drama without jeopardising your career for the sake of a ceremony.

I think you're over-estimating cancel culture. This won't stop anyone going to a Chris Rock show or watching a Will Smith film.

It's controversial and shocking, but nothing worth cancelling anyone over. It's hardly a Jimmy Carr joke or an overly aggressive act of violence.

    Mis-cast as Ali after that

My thoughts entirely! The guy spent 18 months trying to mirror Ali, starred in Bay Boys, and that's his best punch against an unsuspecting skinny guy who's probably 10 stone when wet through?

What happened after the supposed slap ( looked like he didn't connect to me) was a bit confusing as Will Smith had a smile on his face all the way back to his seat. Not the look of an angry man.
Bad taste all round. Given the comments he made during his best actor speech (and allegedly after, to the media) , which made the incident seem genuine

Everything about it, pre and post, feels completely genuine. It's just the actual 'moment' that didn't look or feel right, given the two people involved.

I'm not arsed about it, but plenty of people will be. Anyway, we're going around in circles.

It was a real narcissist's "apology" in his speech after winning.

So much for me not paying any attention to it eh? Not sure how it plays out for Will Smith but this is great for the Oscars.

When you say cancel culture, I presume you just mean consequences of actions?

I didn't even know Chris Rock was a comedian. If he is he deserves a best actor Oscar for impersonating one.

He is an actor though. Perhaps his post slap shouting and his later, on stage speech we’re more Oscar worthy than his film performance.

If this is directed at me, then yes I guess it is. People do make mistakes, though, and it shouldn't be a witch hunt every two minutes. For example dredging up tweets from a decade ago when someone was a teenager and not experienced in life. It goes too far. People change and society changes. I'm not the same person as I was when I was a teenager.

It is not healthy to demand perfection from others. We all have flaws.

Comedian tells a joke. Actor finds joke funny and laughs. Actor in a open marriage sees wife upset so changes tact. Actor goes on to achieve the second biggest achievement of his career after sleeping with Margot Robbie "allegedly".

    Nothing to see here.

It was a generalisation to be honest. And dredging up tweets isn't cancelling someone is it? If you're referring to the English cricketer, he's currently playing in the West Indies. He's doing his job, he's not been cancelled.

And if Jimmy Carr wants to tell offensive jokes - then he has to deal with the consequences of that.

I'm not referring to anyone specific off the top of my head. I just don't like it, simple as that. If someone behaves like a dick, then they should apologise for it. They shouldn't however made to be a pariah and punished for it forever though.

When you read it, Will Smiths missus is very sensitive, about losing her hair ( its not a style), and I think he thinks Rock knew that, but went for the cheap laugh anyway!
I also think he probably wishes he had waited and had it out with him properly later though.

There's many examples out there where there's a cancellation culture where people haven't behaved inappropriately or said something offensive. They just have a different opinion. There's also examples of that in reverse as well, obviously.

Everyone should be held accountable for their actions, and I don't think anyone sane would dispute that. But sometimes the punishment called for can be too extreme for the 'crime' and that's where cancel culture comes from.
