This can only be bad news for us, he's been playing well and in my opinion has been a key player in our recent good run. Jennings is doing my head in; I have no confidence that he'll bother his arse to actually earn any money this season. I hope he proves me wrong.
The general thought at Oldham on Saturday was that he did look a little leaner than previous, even with training top on during the warm-up.
But we still have....... 1) Dale Jennings. 2) George Williams. 3) Declan John we can move further up to put Smith back at LB. 4) The loan window still open. Wing is up there with defence for options. Now if we lost a striker or Davies that would be another matter.
We do have options on the wing as in we have players that are able to play there, but O'Sullivan and Lalkovic on his day are the only two players all season that have offered us some real width and therefore given the team the correct balance. In theory John could do the same on one side and a loan player could come into for the other. I'm not saying our season is over now, but it is certainly bad news we could have done without. O'Sullivan to score on Saturday.
He's done alright for us and nobody can knock our form since he's been here. However for someone lacking goals and assists despite his attacking threat he's talked up as much as Williams who was similar.
Both similar players who help drive us forward. Always looking to attack. Both capable of running with the ball and at defenders. We need to replace him with someone similar. Is Williams fit, maybe a chance of getting him back?
I rated Williams very highly when he was here too so I guess we just look at things differently. No harm in that. I just thought both players gave the opposition something to worry about that nobody else has been able to and that allowed other players space and options. Plus O'sullivan seemed to be getting better with every game. Oh well let's hope whoever replaces him is as good or better. The only positive I can see is that we must be a pretty attractive proposition for a potential loan player. Come into a team winning games with a chance of a Wembley appearance and promotion on your CV. Maybe we will be able to get a "coup" loan signing that otherwise wouldn't be interested in little old Barnsley.
We did well with Williams and replaced him well with O Sullivan. So i'm sure we will replace him well with someone else if we bring in a loan. If he was leaving us off the back of 3-4 goals and 2-3 assists during his time here we'd be more worried about missing him. Where we finish this season will be more down to keeping the likes of Davies, Houriane, Winnall and Scowen fit.
You're right that in the long term we can replace O'Sullivan and I am confident we will. Replacing Willaims with O'Sullivan didn't exactly happen over night though and even when it did he took a couple of games to really show what he's about. Unfortunately we are not able to offer a new player that luxury as we need a seamless transition to maintain the playoff push. Over to you LJ...
Shame that he's going back, I've enjoyed watching him. Was only getting better too. Time for Dale to stop shopping/eating and start doing what he's paid to do.
