In the West Upper there arent many kids though I have 2 with ST's who sit next to me - they come with their Gran
Sort out the security problems that seem to plague the North stand. In the Championship there are clubs with away followings that can fill the stand to capacity but the capacity is restricted to around 4k. We turn away supporters of clubs like Wednesday and by doing so leave around £50,000 on the table.
We are potentially a 15k + Average if we are doing well in the Championship. If we are challenging then we can get 18k-ish I reckon. This isn’t an affluent town but it’s a football town and people have always turned out when they think we can do well. It’s a big enough town to average 20k if the ground enabled us to do it and we were playing exciting football and competing near the top of the Championship.
This was posted on Twitter a couple of days ago, I can’t credit as I can’t remember who it was, so apologies for that, but some of those numbers surprised me.
Done my bit ... okay they are practically cockneys, but they're both die hard reds fans now. The eldest more so than me
I still think we’re missing on on huge numbers of youngsters. They are far fewer than when I was in my teens following the Reds. We’re not too far from introducing Stannah Stair lifts and a trolley park for Zimmer frames. Not that the first idea is a bad one because that walk up to the back of the Ponty is getting harder each season.
Can you imagine how today’s generation of a Ponty End regulars would have got in in the 70/80s in a ‘swaying crowd’. Bloody hell. It would be carnage. Walking sticks, false teeth and flasks all over the place.
Miners strike killed it ... had fantastic home/away support prior to that (regularly took 3000+ away). Think folk just got used to not going during the strike cos they couldn't afford it.
I was 6 in 1982 and that's when I started attending. my memory though only really starts from mid 80’s where attendances were lower. I was surprised at the Wednesday and Newcastle attendances, thought they’d be higher
I disagree. Each week I see different mainly youngish people with tickets coming down the front of the Ponte end. I also see people paying on the turnstile. Not everyone can afford a season ticket or is able to go to every match.
Always thought it strange that Durham didn't have a league team, however, I've just looked and the population's only 48000.
