The old away end held many more than the current stand. Thing to bear in mind was it was built at a time when we were aiming to get back into the top flight, and tbf, we almost did under Bassett. Had we got up and stayed there, we could easily have offered less away tickets and put our own fans in half of it to really create an atmosphere.
Not sure what you mean by that mate. I'm not even sure it would have held that standing before. ?. Certainly not under present h&s guidelines given the size of the muck stack. And I'll stand corrected, I think it was around 2.5k in the prem with temporary seating having to be put in place.
It’s a horrible ground as well. Even with 3 stands it’s too big for them, and last seasons 1-0 win was played in a storm blowing in from the open end. The thing that turns the ‘big away end’ argument on its head is our away form over the last few seasons. We’re not afforded big allocations, and don’t always sell out anyway, but we win a lot on the road, including at Oxford.
Not necessarily the amount of fans in the ground that gives an uplift to the team but the amount of fans who will be vocal. When we made it 2-0 on Saturday, after the celebration of the goal, it was like a library. I’ve said it before. Our home atmosphere is quite embarrassing, and genuinely makes me disinterested in coming sometimes. Is there anything that as a community, because it’s not up to the club, that we can do to enhance the fan engagement at games?
Yes mate probably, but I think we should be proactive with our vocality and not reactive - I hate to say it but I can be pretty envious of the atmosphere at L***s games.
We could always start singing "Barnsley are falling apart again" and "we all hate Barnsley scum" or "no one likes us". That will get them going .
Agreed. I go to most away games and it’s the same everywhere with the odd exception. Singings just not everyone’s bag, same as standing or even going to the game drunk or on drugs.
That's one of reasons I stopped going regularly. Was just getting p 1s sed and can't remember half the games.
I used to do it when I played for the supporters club. Enjoyed it at the time as I was in my 20s, but same as you, I can’t remember many of those games in much detail and made a lovely person of myself on many an occasion.
Be different when George is older if he decides he wants to come. Although I'll be honest he isn't showing any interest in sports at the minute. Cars, tractors and youtube.
I took my son when he was 6 and he was very hit and miss with it for quite a few years. He went regularly until he went to Uni, but now he just goes to the new grounds, he’ll be coming to Crawley at the weekend.
Not by leeds or wendy. If going back to 1999 when the stand was opened. Not sure about other teams. Eg wolves and Ipswich spring to mind with 5k+ but both were far superior teams at the time.
