Think it comes down to more defenders than attackers so therefore more opportunities. Still think Danny Rose will have a decent career at League 1 level and that we let him go far too early. Other than Winnall better than anyone else we have but we let him go to play Cole a loanee.
Most of the best attacking players are picked up by scouts of bigger clubs as they are the ones that stand out from a young age, defenders develop a little older allowing scouts from smaller clubs to get them into their club?
Rose is no longer a regular for Bury, he's on the bench more often than not, although he has started the last three. After that initial flurry of 5 goals in his first 6 games for Bury, he's only scored 4 since and only 1 since November. For all the abuse Kane Hemmings receives, he's matched that return in the same period in a higher league. Apparently, he'll never be a footballer. No idea if Rose will have a good career or not, but as he's still finding his feet in the division below, I doubt he'd have made much impression for us this season. Maybe we should have kept him to see if he could improve, but we had an offer of decent money with a good sell on clause and as much as we'd like to see home grown talent in the side, if the player doesn't improve us, the secondary consideration is, "Can we make money from him?" In this situation we could, so we gave him the choice.
Lower league standard. Other than Hirst and Rhodes, we've produced very little up front over the years and neither of those were around BFC very long. In midfield, we're even less likely to produce anyone of quality.
Still a better record then me. I've only ever produced 2 and I suppose I am guilty of stopping a lot progressing.
Liddell's the only forward I can think of in my time supporting tarn who actually came through and did very well, for us. He did even better for Wigan, albeit at a lower standard. I can understand the theory regards there being less opportunities for forwards, and that it's easier for defenders to break through with there being more positions to fill ont pitch. But there's more in midfield too so why is Sean McClare the best we've produced? Unless I'm forgetting someone.
No you are right during my time as a barnsley fan we have produced very few players outside defence from our youth teams. Do we count Bullock as home grown given we developed him a lot? I guess in more attacking positions there's also more pressure both on the individuals and on managers to make 'safe decisions'. Still hopeful for Oates, Abbott and Digby to break the cycle
Tha reight, spadge, although if you go further back theres Steve Agnew who I think started out as a striker before settling in midfield.
Pre-academy days i.e. Barnsley Juniors we produced Steve Agnew, David Speedie, Carl Airey and David Hirst - all decent strikers.
Always liked Rose and hope he goes on to get a decent living out of the game, this season DW was always only going to blood young Danny and ease him in, if he `d have scored a couple he may have got a run in the side. Kane Hemmings as found it a big step up this season, scored a few, missed a few more but does offer movement up front but struggles with the physical side of the game, many said the same abart wee Danny. Kane has has more game time due to SSW injury, probably more than DW would have wanted for him. Both players are on a big learning curve this season and hopefully there is better to come from both next season onwards. Wasn`t Lita fetched in and then Danny sold almost immediately? Don't think we would have seen that much of Danny this season but then we haven`t of Lita either yet.
I forgot about Agnew. So aye, I'll go with him as our best midfielder produced in my 27 seasons. I only saw his last couple of years with us though. Went on to have an half decent career I suppose.
Speedie was before my time, and whilst he did nowt for us, he did go on to have a great career. I know nowt about Airey. Which says it all. I think it's been made blatant that yes, we produce defenders of quality from time to time, but little else.
