Also to add add balance one of my best mates is from hilton castle....and sunderland daft. He lives in perth now tho (10 yrs) but they have a sunderland branch that screens all their matches in a pub. He openly admits we are a better footballing side and very complimentry. I last went up there when we played em at roker and lost 1..0 on avery wet open ended new years day or 2nd jan. The mackams were lovely to me all weekend (dont think i bought a pint!) but just want to mention that coz there seems to be annimosity building up here, think its just a few venting anger.
Quite a number of Scots from the Borders will probably recount that from within the annals of Celtic folklore , the Geordie and Mackem populous came into being, when a Celtic freedom fighter climbed over Hadrians Wall and sha*ged a pig.! They are not very bright up their way. That fact is evidenced by the fact that during the Napoleonic Wars ,the residents of Hartlepool allegedly captured a monkey from a damaged French naval vessel. As it was in miniature military dress, they put it on trial as a spy and because it didn't respond to any of the charges put to it, it was duly hanged in the town square.!!! Never tire of reminding my Mackem brother in law of those facts.
