    Parents

in a great many cases not only fail to support the principles of the childs education but reinforce views and behaviours that directly conflict with the good work the good teachers are trying to do...
so who's to blame for them being distruptive, disrespectful etc etc
read Pugh, Sugarman, Scarr, Kagan, the list is endless

RE: It should be "May I ask?" EastStander.

Could I just commit an act of pedantry? "Could" is used for many reasons - ability is just one of them. It's much more common than "may" in asking for permission.

RE: Could I ask what you teach?

Sorry - I do realise people make mistakes when typing and I wouldn't have said anything but putting proffession at least 6 times is not merely an error in typing, and considering the poster is a teacher that is why I posted.

RE: Teaching is NOT like any other profession

"There is a HUGE difference between state schools in Barnsley and private schools elsewhere", of course there is, there's a huge difference between state and private schools anywhere.

As for the league tables, well that all depends on how they are interpreted. Personally I'm against them because many people don't look further than the table and no matter how good schools are a league table will always mean that some are at the bottom.
An example - my partner was looking at which school to send her lad to, looking at league table suggested that Kingstone was behind others in the area, but then you have to think about the ability of the child and he is a very bright lad with plenty of parental support, he would be in the top stream of kids in the school where they have a good record - reading the report on the school we found that they have a higher percentage of children with special needs which is what brings the school's average down and, hence, a lower showing on the league table.

    RE: Parents

    Agreed.

A while ago I was in the supermarket and there was a child (about 6 or 7 years old), his parents and what I assumed to be his grandmother. The child had a balloon on a stick and was waving it around and, in the process, hitting an Asian woman with it who then brushed it aside and went off, the kid said "That women pushed me", to which the grandparent said "Oh, Pakis! Well they are just ignorant!"
To which I said very loudly "And that wasn't an ignorant comment at all!"

And then we wonder why children get brought up with the views they have.

Perhaps you could start then, by not nit picking over member's posts....

Some people are becoming increasingly irritated by your pedantry.

Grammatically it is incorrect to use 'could' when permission is implied..

It is however, more commonly used in the spoken word.

    OK

I will still be pedantic over certain things, as I feel it's not being pedantic but being correct.

However, I hereby commit to refrain from just nitpicking over spelling.

However if I can make a humourous comment from an error I shall do so....it's just making light humour rather than having a go.

Well fine, but you did upset Varley and your post came across as arrogant and snide.

Disagree, as would any decent dictionary / grammar book printed in the last thirty years or so. "May" is more formal - that's all. "Could I just interrupt here?" for example is considered grammatically correct (written and spoken) by all examining institutions I work for: IELTS (University of Cambridge, British Council)included.

    Don't back down!!

true nobody is perfect but to claim "hurt feelings" over the fact that he can't spell is ludicrious! that is the whole reason that kids are dumbing down all over the world, teachers that don't care, kids who are spoiled, undisciplined, and ignorant who are trying to sound intelligent but who can't spell.

perhaps if these kids wised up a bit and stopped crying like infants because they got corrected they'd learn a bit.

ggaahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! whiney dumbasses piss me off!!!!!!!!!!

Well if they can keep the Black Sox out of first place for a Cubbie!

What has changed? I saw a piece about the new coach just making them believe in themselves. I thought Baker was going to do the same for the Cubs a couple of seasons ago but they've reverted to form again!

    RE: Hello beautiful

overall, doing good. I was diagnosed with diabetes a couple of weeks ago but I'm keeping it under control with diet and exercise so far. Art is doing well, finally back at work for a couple of months now. William is out of jail again and seems to have learned a bit from this round (I hope) John turned 20 on June 30 (born on mi late muvver's berfdi) and he's coping well. his divorce is final and although we haven't got anything new re: Lily, he's moving on with his life. he's back to work where I work and has registered for classes in the fall. Art's Harem (or Furem as he's dubbed them) are all good too, rabbits Rose Bud and Tobi Tyke are in fine fur although both getting up there in age, we will probably lose one or both soon and cats Arwen and Eowyn are in fine purr.

Tell young Princess to pull in her horns and stop damaging herself or Auntie will have to come over and give her a stern look. Tell Crystal happy birthday for me (or heck, I can send a card lol) but give her a hug for me and tell Chris he's a perfect big brother!

    love to all

    xxx
