unfortunately Alan Trammell was a much better shortstop than he was manager. as they say, Those who can't, teach. Those who can, don't teach. living proof of that adage. but here, it also cycles from team to team. they will win the series one year and be in last place within two. player become free agents and go to other teams, the higher you are in rank, the lower you are in the draft so you get less talent coming up from the farm teams. it's a system set so everyone has a chance to take the trophy eventually. like I said, it's about every 20 years for the Tigers '45,'68,'84 I believe there was at least one in the 20's as well, the Tigers have been around since the beginning of the leagues.
Hang on a minute So you didn't feel like saying :- "Don't worry Kev . You're not under the thumb , obese and gay !!" ???????
RE: Hang on a minute but you AREN'T under her thumb...yer wound around her finger you aren't obese you are well guarded against injury in a fall and you aren't gay, and I bet I can get a written statement from your wife on that one!ff ff ff
RE: On balance Ali I sell moulding and millwork for a living. I get paid on a salary which works in my favor sometimes but most of the time it doesn't. weekend meetings, after work meetings, delivering a couple pieces of trim on my way home to a customer who forgot to order it and has to have it to the jobsite by 6 am the next day. then home to reports, market analysis, and sales research for the three outside reps I work with who each have 100+ customers. All 300+ customers need to feel and be treated like they are the only ones in the universe. if you and your colleagues are anything like your bretheren here in the States, I take more of my time and energy in dealing with wood than you do in forming young minds. I also have to spell each and every work correctly in my reports so there is no misunderstanding and also have to be completely correct entering orders so the correct material is sent while handling 120+ phone calls including more order, fixing mistakes of mine, the outside rep or the customer and inputting as many as 70 orders. and I still have fun doing it. moaning and excuses are not accepted in the construction industry here. 30 students? I'd love to have that "many" to work with. we all have it tough where we work, stop moaning about your work load and just do your job. correctly.
agreed 80% of what is wrong with kids all over is the parents and relatives. not enough discipline at home is the problem. having said that, until a child is of an age to properly judge actions, the other 20% falls on the teachers. during a majority of the year during most of the child's day, the teacher(s) have the most influence on the kids. most seem to center around "building a child's self esteem" (at least here) and won't correct mistakes at all, won't explain what the child is doing incorrectly or why, just merely wait for the parent/teacher conference time to tell the parents what ignorant/obstinant child they have. I got to the point that I would tell each teacher my kids had my home phone, work phone and cell phone and told them I was available at all times EXCEPT the conference time. I would help them work on behavior or homework difficulites at the time they occur not weeks afterwards. I received a handful of phone calls. Primarily complaints weeks later from the school dean that the teachers had forwarded to him that I wouldn't attend the conferences. DUH, they had been told in person and IN WRITING when I was available 24 hrs a day 7 days a week 365 days a year save the conference times. Those that did call, got complete cooperation from me, the boys' dad and the boys. those that didn't I let suffer the consequences of their own actions. The other 80% is the parents using the TV as a babysitter so they can do as they please, not wanting to argue with the kids so throw up their hands and walk away abrogating all reponsibility for parenting on the peers of their child. Most kids are raising themselves with little or no parental involvement. as for those kids, my sympathies to them because neither the parent nor the teacher cares about them. I aw little girl the other day sitting on her new bike having a tantrum because her parents wouldn't buy her the candy she wanted but they were going ahead and buying the bike...not my kids. I'd have put the bike up and walked out with nothing for the brat.
Alex - as I stated clearly. My opinion & experience only Not sure how you conclued I have a ingrained dislike of the profession? Certainly I pointed out I have met one inspirational teacher and if there had been more I would gladly acknowledge it. The rest is purely how I view the teaching profession from my experiences as a parent. I darent even start about how I've been spoken to, patronised and sneered at over the years at parents evenings. The presumption having been made I'm a single parent - I'm not just Mr Ali works shifts & we can rarely make it as a pair. Then of course there's the assumption working parents can always finish early to accomodate the schools timetable
20 weeks holiday a year? On top of the 39 teachers work makes 59 weeks, now I can really say 'what planet do you come from?' ff
Fully agree but I hope we dont fall into that catagory. The RR#s have been taught to be polite and respect others. With the occasional lapse for their 'sense of humour', unherited from dad the psychy nurse, they are well mannered popular kids. Never had a complaint from any other parents, they are frequently invited to sleepovers and holidays with others, just as others kids come away with us. No reason those in charge of their education cant learn that respect breeds respect
Having met many, my opinion is that 75-80% are pretty ok, well balanced folk who really do try to do their best despite the system and the lack of help from many "rights happy" parents.
As for the other 20-25%, all I can say is that not only have they been at school since they were 4 and therefore know so little about the real world but they have spent far too long being the cleverest person in the room and then this attitude gets taken out on their infrequent trips to visit the real world.
I have it on good authority however, from several of the 75-80%, that the reason most teachers enter the profession can be summed up in 3 words - June, July and August!

RE: Teaching is NOT like any other profession Disagree totally with that load of cobblers: 1) Teachers have no incentives - what about a very good salary and 13 weeks holiday a year? Which profession does have incentives apart from sales? 2) Most kids are left to roam the streets at 3 years old? - Don't know where you live mate but that's not true of 99% of areas in Barnsley. In fact I'm buggered if I've ever a seen a 3 year old roaming the streets. 3)The kids in Barnsley state schools haven't got much of a chance. - Anyone with a half decent brain can do really well. If you look at the results, the majority of kids will pass 5 GCSE's. My two lads went to Darfield Foulstone and got 20 GCSE's between them and they weren't the only ones. We're lower in the league tables because of the quality of the raw material not because of the quality of the teachers. In my experience, the teachers in Barnsley are as good as any other town and the kids all have the opportunity of a decent education. It may be that we have a few more chavs, druggies and dropouts than a lot of other towns but you can't pin that on education. More like the parents fault.
Your friend is obviously really knowlegable! I trust you are saying there are school holidays in June, we must be missing those if there are!
