Pat Cryne......(Barnsley) does lack a local population the size of a city.

RE: I reckon there might be about 20 Wakefield Rugby League fans at most in Hemsworth,

Its right on the West/South Yourkshire border, hence the song that used to go up in the Ponty End , that there was only "West Yorkshire singing" Whilst there are probably loads of Man U/Chelsea/Arsenal fans in Hemsworth these days.

When I was growing up it was mainly Liverpool or Barnsley , with the odd fan of another team here and there. What there wasn't were any Man Utd fans , in fact I didnt meet one until I went to University.

Hemsworth is certainly in the BFC catchment area.

RE: There was 'Plenty of Population' at Wembley

Only the PL would attract 25k to Oakwell every week. And the reason for that is that the extra people who did appear just want to watch PL football (the opposition and their players for some people), and I reckon the novelty would wear off if we did ever have more than a couple of seasons in the PL. Look at Blackburn and Bolton for the best comparisons. Bigger stadiums than us, been in PL for years, average about 22k. Similar size towns.

I'm sure that there is a wednesday supporters bus that picks up in Hemsworth n'all.

I reckon if asked which team they prefered in Hemsworth, Leeds would be top by a mile more may watch Barnsley but its the west yorshire roots.

Whats the town population got to do with the price of potatoes

..............NOWT !!!

People that live in the Barnsley district...........come from Barnsley.............full stop

When you are in another town or abroard, say laid at the side of the pool in Majorca and someone asks where you are from..........do you say - frum Low Valley.............or do you say - frum Barnsley

Its only when people ask you where you are from when you are in the district do you actually tell them what part of the district yer from

very much doubt if someone from dunford bridge says they are from barnsley! sure people from penistone say they are from penistone too, then perhaps add near barnsley (perhaps more say near sheffield??)

actually newcastles town population is 189,863, council population total (which includes 189,863) is 259,536... essentially newcastle and sunderland have few competitors when it comes to gaining a fan base as a result of their geographical locations!

Did a dissertation on this very subject

"The sphere of influence of BFC" using "Break point theory" (Geography)

Basicallly, the findings were that a teams sphere of influence was affected by:-
1. Local economic climate (was in the aftermath of the Miners strike)
2. Proximity of other local clubs (this is where Break point theory kicks in - basically the "pull" of a place is lessened by other similar places
3. Success of the team.

suprisingly they were in this order - the success of the team (or lack of it), was alot less significant than the other 2 factors.

Long time ago, but sure the principle still stand.

yep, minimum wage town, traditionally big clubs nearby, and an average team at the moment! all adds up.

Fired....you did a dissertation.............and you didn't include historic success

My theory is this, you can apply a mathmatical formula to the time a club spends in the premeirship, the average home attendance while in the premeirship and then predict the home attendances that club will have over a period of time while out of the premeirship. Surely a mathematician can get hold of this and produce a graph.

Look at Wednesdays crowd still holding after all these years.........but they had a very lengthy time in the premeirship
I remember Wednesday in the old 3rd division getting 12, 13, 14 thousand at home

Look at Leeds, few years out of the premeirship........crowd now down to 20 thousand........if they stay in the 3rd division of English football for a number of years expect 9, 10 thousand at Elland Road...........lets hope

Sheffield United ........long history in the top flight, but only one season this time...........my prediction, if they stay out of the premeirship in the next 2 years watch those 25, 26 thousand crowds drop dramatically to 15, 16 thousand. Why, because they only had one season in the premeirship.

South Elmsall

Is in the Wakefield district but we may as well be in the Donny area, as we are right on the border at the South Eastern tip of the Wakefield district and we all get the impression that no one in authority in Wakefield gives a **** about us.

It's that close to the border with the Donny area that, when South Yorkshire bus fares were subsidised by the council in my youth, but West Yorkshire fares weren't, we could catch the bus to Donny from the bus station and pay 20p, or walk 200 yards down donny road out of town towards the firework factory and pay 2p as we were over the border by the time we got to the next bus stop.!!.

Rubgy is an irrelevance - no one round here cares tuppence for Wakefield Trinity, or Rugby in general.

We are miles from Leeds, much closer to Barnsley or Donny, but there are probably more Leeds fans than Barnsley simply because of the history of success.

Another factor would be

the presence of other sports in the community. Some of the neighbouring towns are rugby towns for example but Barnsley seems to be firmly football. Do people prefer to go fishing of a Saturday rather than go to the match?

To get people to go to Oakwell you have to convince them that it'd be better than what they would be doing. So just what are folk doing on Saturday afternoon? Walking? Shopping? Partying? Day-tripping? Working? Housework?

I guess not many people had shirts 20-odd years ago.

Maybe I was living in a BFC bubble.

I said Tyne and Tees

Teritorially similar, but you're probably right that the population is lower, however, the point is that being where we are there is much more choice of teams to support, try drawing circles round Barnsley and Newcastle and if you go to 30 miles radius, there are significantly more clubs near Barnsley than Newcastle, most of which have historically been more successful in terms of league position than us. I think we do well to get the crowds we do when you take into account the cost and the competing attractions for young kids today.
