What terrible news Paul Futcher was a seriously classy footballer my memories of him are fond as they are clear he graced Oakwell with his footballing nous I'm just glad I had the pleasure of seeing him play. Rest well Paul and thank you for the memories
Without doubt the classiest defender to play for us in my lifetime. Thanks for the memories Futch.....RIP
What a shock. 'Legend' is a word used too loosely in my opinion, but without doubt Futch deserves to be called one.
Sincere condolences to his family and especially to Ron, his twin brother. Lives spent together from birth in such a way will be harder than ever to cope with in the separation of bereavement. Great player. Genuine class on the ball and in the reading of the game.
I agree with everything said by my fellow posters. I actually met him while he was at Derby County. It must have been 1983-ish and I was invited to the Baseball Ground by the company who were sponsoring Derby vs BFC. We won 1-0 (Glavin scored) and the Derby fans were on Futcher's back all the way through the game. He was actually named sponsor's MOTM, a decision that was greeted with utter derision by their fans. Anyway, I was introduced to him after the game and he seemed a nice enough guy. When he was signed by Bobby Collins a year or so later, based upon what I had witnessed, I was dubious to say the least. But what a wonderful signing he turned out to be.

RIP Futch A true Barnsley Legend, would get in in my best 11 alongside McCarthy in the middle of defence. Very sad. Evil disease.
Yes that was a great shame. He never scored for us in 6 years, but I remember him executing a perfect lob over Clive Baker against the Baggies once. He was also manager of my local team Gresley Rovers back in 1996/7 when they were prevented from getting into the Football League due to their ground.
Gutted. Class personified. If he was playing today he'd be top of Guardiola's shopping list. Immense, priceless. RIP legend. Sent via Royal Mail and typed up by my Tapatalk byatch
50 yard run to set up the 4th after 5 minutes. Ignore the handball after 50 seconds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TptOV7a9Hw
Didn't we sign Futch and Calvin Plummer on the same day from Derby? They played at Oakwell against Derby on debut and we scored 5 including one from Plummer. Futch went on to be a magnificent, classy servant to the club and is one of the finest centre halfs I've seen in a Reds shirt. And I've seen some good uns!
