Not wanting to start a fight or owt, but, if someone can undertake you, then surely you need to pull in to the next left lane. You should only be in the middle or right hand lane if you yourself are overtaking.
Agreed. The only way undertaking can exist is on roads where the lanes go in different directions (i.e. undertaking in a left turn only lane). If someone can undertake you then you're driving in the wrong lane.
a few days ago I was driving on a quiet section of the M25 (it was v early Saturday) on one of the 4 lane bits doing approx 70mph I was in the slow lane and catching a car in lane 3. doing about 60. I was going to undertake it and would have done - I recon that is fair game but just as I approached I saw a police car up ahead so had to go across 4 lanes and back again to get past the tw@t. And he still stayed there even after I had gone back on the inside.
RE: Agreed. I thought the Highway Code allows undertaking when the general flow of the traffic in the inside lane is moving quicker than that in the outside...
Driving in Hampshire I'm just up the road from you in Fleet. I don't see many middle lane hoggers down here, just fast lane hoggers. I can normally "undertake" just by driving at the speed limit in the slow lane.
RE: Where in Fleet are you ? Living in a flat on Fleet High Street - shortly relocating to Woking (sigh)
Going north on the M6 on a Friday When you get to the shevrons north of Stoke, you always encounter Inside Lane - Lorries going at 50mph, half a mile apart and nothing else Middle Lane - Cars going 5mph faster than the lorries, nose to tale except for the odd old retired chap or lady, who is staying two chevrons from the car in fornt Outside Lane - Cars going 5 mph slower than the middle lane, even closer together I drive in the empty inside lane at 70 (a good 15mph faster than the people to my right), and pull out (when there's a clear spcae) into the middle lane - generally into the 2 chevrons of space left by the old chap or the lady. It's lovely, you make much better progress, than sitting bumper to bumper in the other two lanes occasionally slamming your brakes on as everyone slows to 40. If there isn't spcae to pull out I sit in the inside lane a reasonable distance behind a lorry. It's a far more relaxing way to drive than bumper to bumper in the other two lanes.
RE: Going north on the M6 on a Friday So you're one of those that bunch up as well. Can't you read the sign that says keep two chevrons between you and the car in front. Maybe by obeying the rules of the road is why the old man/lady are still alive.
Yes for a brief moment I'm in the 98% minority who ignore the chevrons when I move into the middle lane. Most of the rest of the time I'm the only car (caravan towers exclude) in the inside lane and there's a clear 20 or more chevrons between me and the lorry in front
I lived there for a few years Its nothing special - in fact its not even that good, not sure why anyone would want to move there from Fleet
When the motorway is going from three lanes to two and there is loads of warnings telling drivers this, most will try to get in asap but they are the odd arrogant ones who will come charging down the lane while people are waiting in the other two lanes and not think about changing lanes until the cones start to go across the lane thats being close. They also expect you to let them in - no bloody chance they can sit there and hopefully wait longer than what it would have been if they had move lanes earlier
you are wrong on that one mate USE THE FULL ROAD FFS If everyone did what you are on about we would be queing back to landsend, i bet you are also one those idiots who pull out and block the lane!!!
Nutkins How come it is legal and causes no danger in america nt its the pillocks in the middle lane, hang yer back bumper and have no idea what other drivers are doing that are the problem.
Normally if one of the lanes are closing then the ques are already massive anyway so thats not an argument, too many times they slam the brakes on and nearly go straight through the cones (which would serves them right) or they start to bully other road users into letting them in. I have seen it where a car in the third lane went straight to the cones and just turned into the second lane forcing the car in that lane to slam the brakes on and swerve slightly to stop otherwise there would have been an accident, how ironic it was that the lane was closing because of a earlier accident.
I do that... block the lane that is.
Idea is to keep the traffic flowing, best way to do this is to keep a constant flow at the bottleneck, which is impossible to achieve when cars have to keep stopping to let other (I'll get reight darn to front of que and shove in coz am a **** but better then everyone else because I drive a BMW/Audi/Merc)cars in at the bottleneck.
(blagger)

These truly are the most heinous people of all - especially on a two lane dual carraigeway! Two lorries both doing 55mph on their limiters, no chance of getting passed one another causing a 500 yard queue in the second lane - causing 3 series BMW driving w@nkers to undertake. Middle laners are bad, - but HGV drivers who don't lift off to let the other bloke past - take em outside and shoot them.
