Honestly Phillips been mr dependable normally when it comes to pens until today. Just one of those things.
If players are telling their captain (who isn't the usual penalty taker) they want to take one and they're confident, I'd expect him to allow it. So weird how everyone is jumping down his throat. Phillips is the penalty taker. He missed it.
Probably true. Not the point. The point is it wasn’t his decision - so it’s wrong to be blaming him for it.
Don’t get this view at all. Just because he’s captain doesn’t mean he’s one of the best penalty takers.
Either he's the skipper and he takes one. Or Clarke tells him he's taking one and he has no balls. One of them is a gutless coward. Or both.
He takes corners, free kicks etc and is the captain. Yet he let's Earl take a penalty ahead of him. Spineless.
They’ve practiced them. If Earl’s better than Connell at them are you saying we should let the worse penalty taker take one instead just because he’s got a captains armband on?
Weird how much he loves to hog set pieces so much we are very predictable, but then won't step up from the penalty spot. Well at least our teenager and defender with one goal to his name both stepped up.
Loves to 'hog' set pieces? It's all structured. Our set pieces recently have been decent as well, some good ideas and a lot executed almost perfectly. I think they're going in the right direction. No, he isn't. Not anymore.
I was more than happy for Luca not to take one. His penalties have been awful in his time with us. I must admit I said the same as the OP walking away from the ground. We need to change something and I’m not convinced Connell and Phillips would be part of my new look side. That said, Phillips will come good again at some point I think. He’s had these lulls before then gone on a great run of goals and assists. He’s streaky, that’s probably why he’s playing in League One. I must admit I’ve never ‘got’ Connell. He runs around and tries his best, but he’s not very good is he? He’s an average work horse league one midfielder. Nowt wrong with that, he gives 100% and you can’t ask for more than that, but I think it’s a myth that he’s somehow going to make us a fortune when he does move on.
Because we gave him a contract to do two jobs and he's decided since that he only wants to do one. I bet his salary hasn't been altered to a lower amount with him clearly not being a player coach.
I wouldn't say he was last season either. He was decent for Derby in league one, played plenty of games but wasn't outstanding, a good league one player last year. In his cameos here he's been poor and I can understand why others are ahead of him
You have literally no idea who's decided what... If Clarke doesn't want him to play, Clarke doesn't want him to play. Stop making things up what you cannot possibly know. He doesn't get twice the salary for player/coach, it's just the one contract. In fact there was probably incentives if he did actually play, bonuses etc. Similar to the old 'pay as you play' contracts.
https://www.barnsleychronicle.com/article/29855/no-easy-fixes-with-hourihane-to-focus-on-coaching Clarke made it pretty clear Conor decided. We gave him a contract and salary based on two jobs in his job title. He's only doing one of them so should be on less than he was signed on for.
The problem is that isn’t remotely close to being true. Maybe ten years ago he was. He’s been on decline for at least the last five. In the brief time we’ve seen him this season it’s clear it’s not there anymore. No legs.
