    Normal Practice I think.

The network providers require that retailers keep copies of 2 forms of ID when a customer starts a new contract with them (they can have their comiision clawed back if the contract goes sour and they havne't done this properly). Your credit card would have been one of your forms of ID I guess.

This is not to say someone in the store hasn't helped themselves to yours and others details though.

I agree. Seems pretty standard to me. Its a contract they need some form of ID from you

Just that they had trouble with your card when swiping but these things happen

Maybe they should have explained clearer why the took the photocopy though

Its very very unlikey that you have been a victim of fraud in a major high street store. Have you bought on line, over the phone or through the post. thats where you have been hit. or a dodgy back street petrol station and the like

they photocopied it as ID. thats normal

She could have used a utility bill, drivers license, passport etc but chose to provide a bank card as ID

I thought the proof of identity that they require has to contain your address?

    Phones 4 U & Pipex = criminals

Bit late now but don't touch them with a bargepole.

I was ripped off by their moneyback after 6 months contract scam. I also used to work for Homecall (now Pipex), the Phone/Broadband arm of Phones 4 U who are equally as criminal.

No coincidence that they are the two most complained about companies that OFCOM/OTELO deal with.

    Scum, sub human scum.

I very much doubt that it was Phones4U that cloned your card - They're actions do seem a bit strange and goes against data protection.

I've had 2 cards cloned in past couple of years - One of them hadn't even left the house. It had been taken out and a 0% balance transfer done, before being stored safely away.

I also had some small amounts, followed by larger and larger. During about a 4 day period about £12K had been attempted to be taken from my card. I only found out because the CC company phoned me on my mobile and asked to go over some recent transactions. All of which weren't mine and only about £150 had cleared - The rest was refused.

When I quized the fraud dept at the CC company about how my card had been cloned when it hadn't even left the house, I was told that the fraudsters can generate credit card numbers. They then try and make some small payment 2p, 50p etc.. and if they clear then it shows they've hit on a good number. They then try and buy things and then increase the value of the purchases. Mine was web space, itunes, online dating agency :$ , they even attempted to pay off a £300+ debt at a debt collectors before twice trying to buy a car.

Don't stress yourself out over who done it, cos more than likely it was generated. You'll get all your cash back if it ever makes its way onto your statement. I actually came off £20+ in front and one transaction was refunded twice. ;)

Its amazing how much people pass off as fact here

Just for the record pipex and phones 4u are 2 totally seperate companies. Phones 4u have sold pipex's offerings through their stores at time. Nothing else. As they have for any number of telecoms providers

    Technically

Phones 4 U and Homecall were both part of Caudwell holdings and owned by John Caudwell until at least 2006 (I left after that). Pipex bought Homecall up but not sure what they did with Phones 4 U.

Still wouldn't go anywhere near either of them again :)

    Thats correct

Homecall was bought by Pipex from tHe Cauldwell Group and integrated into their business, but pipex and phone 4u are seperate

I have no attachment or views on either company but I do think that Tina should have thought a little bit more before accusing Phones 4U of fraud on a public forum

I haven't accused them of fraud. I wouldn't do that. I said 'potential'' fraudulent activity.

I felt uneasy with how they handled my card transaction and how they took my card and photocopied it. I had a driving licence with my name and addresss on it, but they refused that and insisted on taking the details of my card.

If you read my post you will see that I did not accuse them I merelty said 'potential' and that's different. Jusding by the no of posts other people feel just as uneasy as I did.

Also I have had my cards cloned twice now and I am sick of it.

No I didn't. I offered them my driving licence with my full name and address on and they refused it.

I have no war to wage against them, but they photocopied my card and it's since thenn I have had problems.
My bank card was used to pay for the phone etc etc

Putting the company name and the words fraudulent activity in the same sentence

can lead to an incorrect assumption

Am sorry you have had your cards cloned twiced but as most people on here have pointed out its unlikely to be phones 4u. As people have said its either random number generation or from online fraud

"Jusding by the no of posts other people feel just as uneasy as I did" Actually only D/T had your concerns about this so not many really. Then Mancunian tyke about an other issues with phones 4U and issues with pipex

    Fine, fine, but

Why are you so concerned in analysing my every word/sentence and cutting and pasting the said phrases.?

    I find that really disturbing.

As I said, I have no axe to grind with 'Phones 4 U'
    .
I have shopped online, in the Far East and by telephone etc and had no problems whatsoever.
My problems started in the February of this year 2008.
'Phones4 you' photocopied my cards in Nov 2007.
I have since been cloned twice.

    I have informed my bank.

As you say, it may be nothing but very worrying to me and I suspect to others when they are asked to give up their card and thesaid card is then taken away to be photostated.

I knew someone who worked for Phones4U

Said it was the most corrupt place imaginable.
