People have been rightly patient for three months, but society has been getting more and more restless. Let's say in the next seven weeks we see no spike despite how people behave so deaths/infections are extremely minimal or nill. What do you do from August onwards? People won't continue to be socially distant once the threat is that low. Fatigue is setting in and people will want to go away in August for an unrestrictive holiday before the days start drawing in.
First world problems. Don't get me wrong - holidays are seen as important to many people, but they aren't necessities. You won't die if you don't go on holiday. I haven't been on holiday for about 10 years. This year we were hoping to for the first time in a long time but abandoned that plan about the second week in March. If there isn't a spike in infections/deaths, then yes I agree that we can start to relax. But what if there is? Ever heard of the precautionary principle?
I think for plans the government should think big and show some positivity. Say there is a chance social distancing could be over in August which would help tourism and hospitality no end. Say the plan is to get schools back to normal for the new year in September. If said plans don't happen due to a spike then people would understand. But at the moment nobody knows where they stand or how far away the end is if things keep going in the right direction. At the moment there looks to be a chance for big crowds to return in the coming months.
I've been babysitting some key worker children today, ranging from year 2 to year 5. They have absolutely no concept of social distancing whatsoever no matter how many time we tell them. September seems much more sensible to me. Unless a lot changes I can't see schools being fully open even then.
Just had a message from my kids school. One of the kids had tested positive so they are closing their ‘bubble’ down and getting the bubble members to self isolate. 14 kids and families.
We received a message yesterday saying one of our pupils had tested positive (secondary school not primary). The students and staff in that bubble have been informed that it was their bubble. It wasn’t mine so not sure what they’ve been asked to do, if anything, but the bubble hasn’t been closed (not due in again until next week anyway).
Yeah It doesn’t seem clear what the action is. I thought it was retest everyone in the bubble and then resume if all negative. I guess they could be doing that.
The email said that after talking to a clinician at PHE they said no need to close the bubble or school to take any further action. At our training though they said that if someone in bubble tests positive then we have to get a drive-through test and send a screenshot of results. No idea if that is still the case and they’ve been asked to do that or not.
