Who would put an offer in for Hourihane that we couldn't refuse to turn down? We have money from Stones/Mawson so we don't need to balance the books, they could get him on a free in the summer, same goes for Sam. If Burnley other anything like the money for Mawson for Roberts then they're mental, which is the only type of offer l see us accepting.
Good shout. In my time watching there have been four stand-out sides: The Clarke / Hunter side, The Wilson promotion side, the Bassett side and this side. This side is fantastic but not the best I've seen, not yet.
Totally agree. Bassett side was as good as any with Shipps & Higgy... In a way nearest to this side in the way we can get the ball forward.
In terms of resources, player wages and transfer fees paid we are. In terms of the quality and determination of the players we've actually got, I don't think so.
Apart from money ! Why would they want to leave? This team has everything. Dare to dream. Just what could we achieve if we could keep this team together and strengthen?
Looking at Wilsons first choice eleven and Heckys (I've left Matty Appleby out for Bullock so both play a 4-4-2) Watson v Davies Eaden v Bree Davis v Roberts De Zeuw v McDonald Thompson v Yiadom Marcelle v Kent Sheridan v Scowen Redfearn v Hourinhane Bullock v Hammill Wilkinson v Watkins Hendrie v Winnall Tough one...as a team you'd have to say Wilsons as they were top 3 in the Champ (div one) all season. Man for man... Watson had his weaknesses but I'd put him slightly ahead of Davies. Bree but will be better than Eaden but isn't right now Thompson obviously more of a natural left back than Yids. De Zeuw would get in any defence we've had. I'd partner him with Robbo. Clint had more of a goal threat than Kent. Think Scowen is better than Sheridan. You'd have to make a way for Redders and Connor to be in the same team. Big Sam Winnall fan but Hendrie was such an inspirational signing for us and scored some beautiful goals. Would love a target man like Wilkinson in the squad now. Two different styles of play too. wilsons team was more pass and move, this team is more pressing and counter attack. Love both teams. Can't remember further back though. 95 my first season Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
In terms of resources, player wages and transfer fees paid we might be the most successful team in the country right now.
how many were not our players in 96/7? Not sure we had anyone on loan then tbh. Here we have Kent, Morsy and Armstrong all playing their part.
I'm not saying we'll get in there because I think Norwich & Villa are more likely to do it than us given that they'll probably spend money this month but I look at Leeds who are never more than a game or two away from a crisis, Huddersfield who's manager clearly has an agent putting his name about & Sheff Wednesday who are doing well point wise but according to most of their fans aren't playing as well as last year so yes I can see us getting above at least one of them if we can keep our team together. I do think we should have more points as well. Should've played against 10 men for more than half the game against Burton & Bristol with more chance of getting extra points, should've got something at Hillsborough & should've had 3 points against Birmingham if the linesman does his job.
There's always a chance we sneak into 6th but with Derby , Norwich , Fulham in the chasing pack it's a tall order, we'll need to be lucky with injuries and suspensions as well . If we've kept the first team intact during January and good results , 7 points, against Fulham ,Leeds and Rotherham , we could be getting excited going into a tough February ( Huddersfield Reading Brighton all top six sides)
If we'd beaten Wednesday, as we deserved to do, and other results had been the same, we'd be in a play-off spot now. 4 wins and a draw in the last 6 away games. That sort of form is a massive rarity for Barnsley in the "second tier". We've won a total of 6 away games already; we won only 8 when we went up in 96-97. The play-offs are a very real possibility in my opinion, IF we can keep Conor. I backed us for promotion at 150/1 a couple of weeks ago. Those odds have now shrunk to 66/1. Who knows - those odds may have shrunk to 6/1 by the start of May.
