Genuine question then, if trans women are women( as you have stated already), and therefore we should just refer to them as women, why do we have to call women who were born women “cis women”? Should the poll just say men or women and leave it for people to identify as they see fit without the need for further labelling?

I didn't make the poll, but yes that would be fine to just have man or woman on the poll. (and a non-binary or other option for anyone else would probably be nice)

But if you want to differentiate between cis people and trans people (which Supertyke apparently did want to), then the modifiers can be used for that to get more thorough data.

I really don’t care whether you’re male (however you got there), female (however you got there) or want to identify as a plant pot.

Unlike others on here (based on this thread) I strongly believe that men (however they got there) shouting or swearing at women (however they got there) is out of order. I’m not a fan of anyone shouting or swearing at anyone full stop. I’m guilty of it myself in the past. We all make mistakes. But it feels worse to me, when it’s a man firing off at a woman. I won’t say “it’s how I was brought up” because I was also brought up in a time where I was told to be ‘wary’ of ‘coloured folk’ and that ‘queers’ should be locked up.

Time moves forward. Things change. Evolution is fact.

I like to think I do my best not to upset folk if I can help it. But we are only human! Key point right there.

Excellent post. The whole trans debate is a highly complex one, and there are certain aspects of it which I don't fully understand. That's all the more reason to discuss it in an open and adult fashion, rather than accusing people of "transphobia" for holding certain opinions. People who hold vile views that trans people should be beaten, shouldn't exist etc are rightly called out by all decent members of society. But that really shouldn't apply to people having doubts about whether puberty blockers are the way forward, not being comfortable with biological men in women-only spaces, and other more nuaced aspects of the debate. Certain dogmatic attitudes are completely killing rational and reasoned discussion around this topic. That can't be a good thing.

This thread is a microcosm of the toxicity of the entire trans debate, although thankfully not on the scale seen on the bigger social media platforms. People expressing their reasonably held views being automatically accused of bigotry as the default response.

Oddly enough, there's plenty of debate around the inclusion of 'cis' in the poll options, but virtually none about there being only one transgender option on the list, which most people seem to have overlooked.

You still don’t see anything whatsoever wrong in what you said, or indeed your embedded views that led to it do you?

That’s fine. I’ll leave it at that. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday.

Interesting take - and I appreciate your right to call out anyone’s behaviour if you find it abhorrent, but why is swearing at a woman 100% worse?

Women aren’t delicate little flowers that need protecting from the nasty words dirty boys use. In reality there isn’t really much, if any, need to tell anyone to f*** off; though I’m hardly claiming that i never have - whether or not the recipient of the foul language was male or female wouldnt come into the equation at all. Also, to be honest, I’ve never found being sworn at to be offensive anyway.

I don’t know, maybe it’s because I come from a stock of strong willed women who’d never be brow-beaten by anybody - and married a woman with similar steel - they’d all be just as likely to be saying it to me - more likely even - and would have very little issue in offering considered reposte to any individual who offers up such ‘abuse’. I’ve mentioned plenty that my Mrs works in a bookies - she’ll get that twice an hour. Wouldnt bat an eyelid.

There’s a bit of old school chivalry in your thinking Scott, and i can’t criticise it at all. But such chivalry had its heyday in times where sexual inequality was absolutely rife. It isn’t fully rectified now, of course. But true equality will only exist when everyone treats everyone with equal respect and equal contempt at the same time.

In summary, whilst I clearly don’t find swearing as problematic as you generally, I can’t argue that swearing like that is right and proper - and it’s fine to call that out.

But I don’t concur that it’s worse if it’s directed to a woman. There are of course specific threats that women do need protecting from sadly - I’m not that naive - but I don’t see women to need protecting from faceless, insulting language from, in your words, a coward.

Lots of examples of men 'owning the narrative' in this thread -

    - maybe we should step aside and take the lead from those most directly affected by 'trans' issues and respect their views/concerns.

I agree, but as far as I'm aware no trans people have weighed in on this thread as of yet.

Can you clarify who you mean by "those most directly affected"? Do you mean trans people, in which case, as above, I don't think any have contributed. Or do you mean women, in which case, why?

As I’ve said in my only other contribution to this thread, I’m with Scott on this particular topic. Whilst shouting or swearing at anyone is not great, I find it worse when it’s a man aiming it at a woman.

I have read why you think that isn’t the case. So there’s no need to reaffirm those beliefs. More power to you.

In this form of communication I think it makes no difference myself.

However in person I would agree completely with you.

Starting to think Barnsley BBS should stick to football- gets nasty every time there’s different opinions.

Some of names that Helens been called on here is disgusting, hypocritical, and ironic considering the “point” of the thread
