What if some of the Barnsley fans who read this board are of Chinese heritage or have Chinese wifes/partners/kids? Are they not allowed to be offended because it's 'light hearted banter'? Would you go into your local Chinese takeaway/restaurant and give them some 'light hearted banter'? Probably not.
I'm generally very sensitive to offending people but is this really that different to when we have these threads making flower based puns, or cheese based puns for player's names? If people were making up random fake words that they thought sounded vaguely Chinese, or choosing insulting terms, then I'd agree but so far it seems to be fairly limited to food typically sold in Chinese restaurants. I'm very big on 'would you say it to their face' things and no, I wouldn't go in a takeaway and say it, but mainly as I suspect they'd wonder what the heck I was going on about unless they supported Barnsley and enjoyed crap puns. I wouldn't go into a florist's or a cheese-making shop and say it either, mainly because they think I'd gone mad, not because it might offend them. If somewhere in China they are making up player names using jam-and-scones or fish-and-chips references or something else quintessentially British then I wouldn't be offended by that, infact I'd quite like to read them. This thread isn't in any way trying to insult or look down on Chinese culture or people, I don't think anyone in this thread thinks they are better than Chinese people because they wrote a pun using a Chinese food.
Are you racist if you insult everyone? Cue the obvious comments of no you're a knobhead. But are you?
