What's a defender meant to do then?

Marshall at Cardiff has let loads of goals in but everyone agrees he's been one of the best GKs in the PL. Your logic is flawed hems, as per.

Thought this thread was asking who we - as individuals - voted for POTY? I voted for Luke, and I've given my reasons for that in previous threads.

He won the award in 2012 despite missing more games. So that's irrelevant.

If we're giving it to the bloke who's played most, let's give it Kennedy.

Didn't realise every thread had a dedicated theme, mate.

Luke has had some poor games and made some mistakes (as have all our players). Just find it interesting that because he's had a good few weeks recently he's fine but because O'Grady has had a bad few recently (and I don't think he's been that bad) he's ruled out despite the goals and fact he's quite obviously knackered.

IF I remember Butland conceded 1.2 goals per game. A reason for that was he gave the defence confidence. Used to come out and get corners and freekicks and got everything in the box. Did you go to the Leeds match. If so did you see M'Voto rocket steele in the first half? that didn't happen under Butland because if it came into the 18 yard box he would have got it. M'voto had to clear it 6 yards out. If I was Steele I wouldn't want to anoy big M'voto

    Haha.

    Cranie
    Wigan at home.
    Watford at home.
    Huddersfield away.

    Steele
    Blackburn.
    Watford.
    Huddersfield.

Both as bad as each other!

    I'm with you on this.

I feel this is the only reason Steele is getting mentioned in the same breath as O'Grady.

    1. O'Grady
    2. Cranie
    3. Steele

I believe you that Butland is a better keeper. He's played for England and is obviously well thought of. We can't hope to have a permanent keeper of that quality, especially in League 1. Despite that, I saw Butland flapping at crosses, miskicking clearances and letting soft goals in. I can remember thinking on several occasions how poor he was, considering his international credentials.

My point is that even if we had had the best keeper in the world, we would probably still have gone down because the team as a whole wasn't good enough.

Anyway, Butland is not in the running for player of the year so there's no point in arguing about it.

I ended up voting for O'Grady although I'm feeling bad about not voting for Cranie.

The poor lad spent the 1st 3 months surrounded by Wiseman, M'Voto (when he was ****) & Kennedy. If nothing else he deserves the sympathy vote!

Cranie went off injured before we conceded at least the last two goals against Wigan, so you can't have that one!:D
I don't care if you disagree with me, mate, I still think you're lovely!:D

Trust me, I do not form opinions based on other posters' opinions. When I post that I've voted for Steele, I post it because that's what I've done. I gave my reasons for doing so in a previous POTY thread.

You said Luke had his worst spell for us (in seven seasons) from August to December. I disagree. I believe he was struggling in August, as were the entire back four. He was blamed/scapegoated by Flitcroft. Replaced by a 42 year old pal. Then Butland, who let us be really honest here was no better than Steele. He had a great game against Wednesday at home, and in his final display at Leeds. Other than that, it was like watching standard Steele.

My point on Cranie is simple. He's not a good defender. He has poise, great technique for a centre half, and is probably our best of a bad bunch. But POTY? Not in my opinion. His positioning is woeful and it baffles me how he's never pointed out for any criticism. I recall the last game of last season. He ballsed up for both Hudders goals and folk on here blamed Wiseman..

That's not me saying he was our worst this season, I would suggest he's been one our top five performers. But POTY? Not for me. And that's the point, innit? This thread asked for our individual opinions. You and I disagree. Nowt wrong with that. At least you offer up explanations and offer up good debate. Unlike someone.

Here are some statistics for you:

In his games for us Jack Butland let in a total of 16 goals and made 22 saves. That means he let in 42% of shots on target.

Luke Steele conceded 58 goals and made 98 saves. That means he let in 37% of shots on target.

I fully expect this post to be ignored.

Steele, O'Grady and Cranie are the candidates for me. Don't mind what order. Other creditable mentions to Jim O'Brien for running his legs to jelly as usual, Ramage for coming here on loan, giving his all and acting like a real professional, Jennings for having a go, now he needs to work on his technique, M'Voto for being massive (and improving), Lawrence for caring, and Bobby Hassell for being Bobby Hassell. The rest, young uns apart, you can throw in the canal for all I care.

I haven't voted though. Over the last 10 years the club have done their best to take the POTY away from the fans and turn it corporate. When that didn't take they barely bothered at all and they've run it in to the ground. It used to mean something, now it doesn't. Get The Chronicle back involved with the voting, half our fans rarely use t'internet, make a song and dance about it, make the recipient feel special and I'll start voting again.

Anywhere in the 18 yard box?! That's what I call commanding the area!

I haven't voted for Luke based on a few good recent weeks. I've voted for him based on his performances since returning under Danny. That's a good 26 games I think. I also don't think he did much wrong in early games under Flicker. He had a bad day against Blackburn at Ewood Park and he was dropped. The next game we got smashed for five again, but with eleven (not ten) players on the field. Which suggests to me that our defence as a unit was ***** at that point. The whole team, in fact.

I've said it before, but if Steele or COG win it then I'll be happy with either. Been our best two players in my opinion this season. I had O'Brien in third place, and Cranie fourth, Big John fifth. Which shows how **** a season it's been.

In the absence of any real contenders, I have opted for COG. I fully expect him to follow the trend of POTY's leaving but still....

I in all honesty can't vote for Cranie. I don't rate him. I think he is very soft for a centre half and I don't see him as a winner.

Oh, and the reason I voted for Cranie is because I believe he's been our best player throughout the season.

I've decided it's Steele. Keep up, Kev. :)
