For me it's between Hourihane, Watkins and Mawson. I think Watkins was an unsung hero and contributed more to the team first half of the season than anyone else. Given his recent injury he might have lost some ground but for me he has worked several positions and arguably performed his role more consistently than anyone over the course of the season. There is still a lot of opportunity for an hero to emerge though in these last couple of months.
http://www.soccerbase.com/players/player.sd?player_id=46035 Hammill has 5 goals in 24 matches. 3 were in his first 9 games though and now with only 1 goal and a red card to show for his last dozen games he's either been found out, gone off the boil or a bit of both. Goes without saying we need him back to his early form for us so we've a better chance of promotion. Hope he bangs a couple in at Wembley. http://www.soccerbase.com/players/player.sd?player_id=55228 Conor has 10 goals in 42 games for a better ratio and has scored 3 in his last dozen. It's a shame Soccerbase doesn't have an assists column too. http://www.soccerbase.com/players/player.sd?player_id=67979 Adam Davies could well be top three too as he's played 38 games already and has a dozen clean sheets. Not many keepers will have a 25% clean sheet ratio over such a vast amount of games. Three in a row too.
Davies won't be close, but it's fair to say he's had another strong season. Underrated. Mawson's getting votes because he's come through adversity, he's developed/improved over the season, chipped in with goals and seems to be the new Bobby Hassell figure outside of football. George Williams would be a big contender had he played all season, because his performances have been ridiculously good considering all the context. Robbo's done similar to Mawson, in coming through some adversity. Neither of them have warranted POTY though, not in my opinion. They've been good. But key? No, not really. Players player will go to Alfie or Winnall though, mark my words. I really don't see how anyone could look past Conor, Sam or Marley. 36 goals scored between em, 25 assists shared out. When any of the three are missing it's very noticeable. But more so when Conor limped off at Bradford in the JPT, at the start of that 8 game losing run. I accept the allure of Hammill and yes his return and other additions were massive in our reversal in fortunes, but Hourihane's return from injury was the catalyst. For me. Last season he was compared to the likes of Hignett, Howard and Butterfield. He's more like Redfearn now. Midfield general who stops, scores and creates goals regularly whilst leading his team on one of the best runs of form in the clubs history. A Wembley winner, captain of the first reds side to win a trophy at Wembley, that should seal the deal. If he repeats the trick in May and we end up promoted he'll be a ******* legend. If only the club and LJ hadn't dicked around early doors we'd be home and hosed by now.
