LOL ... an entertaining post anyway sir.

I do like a bit of tomato sausage myself. Breakfast for me is mainly scrambled egg & badly burnt toast.

That was a top quality butcher.. My Mum always got her meat from there and we never ever had a bad piece ever... For me Hoyland died when they took down the old Town hall and the row of shops going down to Elsecar... remember Maltby's and the old Turf pub... and Tals barber shop... Claytons old furniture shop, Melia's grocery shop.... Bradleys etc ... that was MY Hoyland ... I so miss that Hoyland

Me too old lad, knew them all as a kid. Moved "back home" to Elsecar almost 25 years ago after living away for 12 years. Not regretted a moment. Still some good real ale offerings in the village, Crown Inn, Market Hotel, The Fitz and to a lesser extent the Milton. Clothiers shuts down three times a year and re opens later with a new manager but the old Tommy Upsteps been shut longer than I can remember. (Probably near on 40 years)

I worked in John halls fruit and veg shop from about 1995 to 1998 ish.
Is he still trading? He had a little shop near the market and one next to the butchers across from what used to be kwiksave.
And also used to stand on Saturday morning market in Penistone.

I know that most tomato sausage tends to be made with beef (although not sure of the quality) We can't get tomato sausages here in Italy (although Italian Pork sausage is FAR superior to anything you can get in the UK.)

Sooo... provided you don't mind them being 'skinless' get the best pork/beef sausages you can and take them out of the skins, (or buy sausage meat) mix with tomato puree and, if for sandwiches shape into patties, (the whole lot only takes a couple of minutes) and fry (or make them sausage shaped if you prefer) . The tomato puree caramelises on the outside of the sausage/patty and gives it a bit of crunch. Patty shaped means they cook faster and more evenly making up for lost time preparing them and they fill a sandwich better... although it is handy if the pan is non stick to stop them breaking up when turning. You also know that the tomato isn't disguising cr*p meat as is sometimes the case with tomato sausage.

My mum too used to get a joint of beef for our Sunday dinner from Christopher Guest. I do remember Vic Maltby, because my Grandad used to go out walking with him from time to time when he retired. Some other names you mention I was too young to remember. Though I do remember a fish shop called Sowerby's (?) on the corner opposite the old electrical shop - which has also closed down and the building is boarded up. Hoyland now = take-aways, betting shop and off-licence. It's not as it was.

I got some very nice Mexican tomato sausages from the farmer's market in Ripley, north of Guildford. Though the tomato sausage afficianados in this thread might scoff at my amateurish choice.
